I’m sorry anthonya. My sister got rejected from her dream school as well, but she loves where she is now. Hopefully things will work out this way for you too! Were you looking at BU?

no worries, if GW is still your #1 a year from now, just transfer, then you’d prob save yourself like $20,000 plus for freshmen year.

Ye, I also am applying to BU, SU, NE, american and a few more…
Can I re-apply for the regular decision? or is that not allowed? I dont know if i wana transfer…a tiny bit put off, but every time i think about it i just wana be alone…it was my DREAM school. ughhhhhhhhhhhh

Denied Admission

Sorry to hear about your rejection.

You asked what could have caused it. I believe it’s your academics as in GPA and SAT. Both of them are below where they would like to see, especially the GPA part. Note that unless you have a hook, both GPA and SAT should be well above median to feel comfortable.

When are you are going through the RD applications, make sure that you are applying to a few safety schools. It seems that you were not taking the GPA and SAT part seriously previously.

Note that notwithstanding all the claims by the universities that they are using “holistic” evaluation, the academics still trump almost everything else in terms of the admission qualifications unless you are URM, athlete, developmental case, first generation college-bound, legacy, etc. All these talks about “Oh, we look at things way beyond the scores and numbers…” are all marketing talk on their part to encourage more students to apply so that they can have a low acceptance rate and increase the perception of selectivity and desirability of their school in the minds of the unsuspecting students and parents. It also increases their ranking on USNWR etc. Almost all schools play this game.

This is especially more so among schools who seem to set their heart on going up in the USNWR ranking chart. Everything I have seen/read lately about GWU tells me that they are trying to climb the ranking chart. They want to publish incoming student body stats that are high on SAT, GPA and class rank.

Again, it’s not too late. if you haven’t done it yet, be sure to add some safety schools.

Good luck.

Having seen your stats, maybe BU, SU, NE, and American are reachy matches- please have a very reliable safety or 2 on your list, just in case. How about U Maryland Baltimore, Towson, (since you like DC) or UMass Dartmouth?

Catholic University in DC would be pretty safe, too.

NE, SU, and especially American are alll already safetys…they are easy to get in

hm. let’s see. uh maybe because you had a 3.0/1800 sat? you cant expect to get into a good school with that

This board seems fairly quiet. Anyone else out there accepted/rejected?

3.0/1800: American U is NOT a safety. Check their stat. American U stats are similar to GWU stats: maybe a little low, but close enough.

Safety is if your stats are at the top 25% level in all stats plus average/average ECs. Median means it could go either way. below median: it’s already becoming reachy/match. Of course, this is for unhooked candidates.

i was accepted, but my parents are going berserk over the tuition. we looked into it before, and they honestly didnt expect me to get in. now that i did, they’re really worried. does anyone know when GW mails out the financial aid packages?

a 3.0 GPA in my school is equivalent to maybe a 3.4 or 3.5 to a school in the states…
a guy got accepted to GWU ED1 with a 1650 sat and a 3.4 gpa…how the hell did he get in

once again, im a crazy competitive school in hong kong…not a public or private school in the states…its MUCH different

We are not trying to crush you. We are trying to give you advice so that you can go on to the RD round and have a better results. If you are in a denial mode and keep rationalizing your GPA, fine: it’s your decision. However, if you have a problem with RD results, don’t say you were not warned.

Regardless of how competitive your school is, GPA 3.0 spells trouble for the admission officers. If your SAT was very high, then you could put together a convincing argument that there was a GPA deflation at your school. However, from the admission officer’s point of view, your below average SAT (for their class) does nothing to dispel their concern about your GPA.

Also, note that they have to publish their incoming student statistics, and they hate to show their low stats and they don’t like student stats that lower their overall profile. that’s why some competitive high schools in USA no longer rank their students: they realized that a lower rank at their highly competitive school for students who would have been a top student in a mediocre school really hurt the students. Even when the colleges KNOW that lower rank or GPA may still mean outstanding students, they try to avoid them since it lowers their overall school profile and adversely affects their USNWR ranking.

This is exactly how most of the other admission officers in other colleges will react - the kind of colleges in line with GWU in terms of selectivity, ranking, etc.

You have an interesting background, and in some universities, that will allow you go over the hump and compensate for your low GPA and below average SAT (for the kind of schools you are applying to). However, don’t ever think that at the kind of schools you are talking about with GWU’s rankings and selectivity, your GPA and SAT combined is NOT a liability. You may overcome it and you may be admitted. However, it may not happen. If it were to happen that easily, GWU would have been a place where you had a good shot: they LOVE the foreign language background and international flavor.

Again, we are trying to give you advice so that you can have better results with RD. We are all advising you that you pick some good safety schools. if you think we are all trying to just bash you, go ahead. It’s your choice. About the guy with 3.4 and 1650: you don’t know anything about him. It could very well be the case that he has hooks.

PS: crazy competitive schools in Asia are DIME A DOZEN. International students from Asia who are applying to USA schools are all from crazy competitive schools. Don’t think your school is so much more amazing than all other schools that international students from Asia are applying from. They have # of slots they have in mind for the international students. Think Beijing, Shanghai, Seoul, Tai Pei - students from this region applying to USA schools are ALL attending crazy competitive schools. Kids from these schools are the kids you are competing against, not some students from low level school in a tiny town in Montana.

you should really focus on your other schools now. Make sure you recommendations are top notch.
