Early Decision - within lower range?

While on a trip on the east coast sophomore year, I found Johns Hopkins to be a beautiful place. I know people sometimes complain about the city and things, but for some reason, I found a certain, perfect balance of solitude and community there. I began pushing myself end of sophomore year to actually do well in high school, and I had high hopes. But once I reached mid-junior year, I completely let that go. My GPA and EC's give me a .00001% chance for Hopkins, but I want CC's opinion if I should still keep it up and apply ED anyway. It wouldn't hurt, right?

Basic stats:

GPA: 3.7 UW; 4.1W
JHU doesn't really count fresh grades in their stat-ranges, so I've gone according to that.
Here's the breakdown of my GPA though:
freshmen - 2.5, 2.5 (10 semesters)
sophomore - 3.0, 3.6 (10 semesters)
junior - 4.0/4.3, 3.9/4.2 (10 semesters)
NUVHS - 4.0/5.0, 4.0/5.0 (10 semesters)

SAT: 2260; 700m 760cr 800w 11essay (Will retake in Oct for 2300+)
SATII: 770ush, 770chem, 790bio, 800mathii (Also taking Literature in Nov)

AP scores: bio4, ush5, calcbc5, chem5 (self-studied calci&ii, and chem)

Volunteer: 200+ (Community Foundations, Soup Kitchen, Camp Counselor in Texas)
Work Experience: Tae Kwon Do Instructor, Math Instructor
Community/Private Sports: Fencing, Soccer, Taekwondo, Hapkido, Kendo (2 black belts)

Organization: Northern Chapter Sierra Student Committee (a lot of environmental service); interned for EnergyWise and related organizations for 3 months (last summer)

No EC's at school whatsoever. Every single school year I've spent at a different high school; sophomore year I spent it at two. Although my name is on the roster for eco-club freshmen year, science-clubs sophomore year, I did not do anything significant in them, since I kept switching schools (for valid reasons).

No government positions either for same reason. ^

Should I still apply? Or does JHU value EC's to the extent where me applying is just a waste of.. whatever i will contribute to my application.

Any opinion would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for reading! If you've made it this far ;)

wow! That’s actually impressive, because I’m planning on applying to JHU through ED too, and ur SAT’s beat mine, but unfortunately extracurricular activities r important. Anyway, u should volunteer or try to get an internship to increase ur chances and this can kinda be like a substitute. Ur gpa is good and ur SATs are amazing.

thanks… that’s really nice of you! haha and yes, i will be joining many relevent, important clubs senior year. and i forgot to mention i was an intern as an aid for an environmental agency.

but wait, since we’re applying ed, does hopkins even get to see any of our senior year stuff?

You can mention in your application your legitimate reason for not having any ECs. I’m sure adcoms can understand since spending every year at a different school is something out of your control. Your freshman and sophomore year GPA may raise a red flag but other than that, you are a solid candidate for this school

i will definitely work on including that. and thank you for your opinion. gives me a little morale in this crazy summer. :)

You guys need to know that clubs don’t count for JACK! You look like you have real, legitimate extracirricular activities like NCSSC, an internship, sports, and work. Colleges value all of those far more than a math club presidency or being student body secretary.

Wow! you say ncssc like you belong to it, do you? and thank for the helpful comment!
it definitely doesn’t help my chances, but at least i know not to make my essay on why i’m not part of clubs/club president… :]

Looking good! I’d say you have a decent chance!

can i bump this? i’m wondering if taking a subject test in november will even be seen my the admissions if i am applying ED?

^^ doubtful. Their website says you should be done all your testing by October if you want to apply ED. That said, if you get deferred, then it will be seen in RD. You should take it anyway for your RD schools I think.
