I will be moving in early due to time constraints placed on my mom. I read on The University of Iowa website that early move in begins Aug 16th at 8 am. The website further states that the desk will be open 24 hours a day. Does this mean that I can move in on the 19th (ideally) or 20th at anytime during the day since it's after Aug 16th? Typically when my mom plans a vacation she makes plans 2 months ahead and now have prompted this question. My orientation unfortunately is on Aug 20th. Also due to her age since she prefers not to drive the distance, I also have to move at the driver ( relative) her pace.

cb, it is my understanding that you can move in at ANY moment, round the clock, from Monday the 16, 8am, onward. So yes, 19th or 20 are fine. You just pay the daily room rate for as many days as you are early.

And I don’t believe there’s foodservice either, prior to Sat.

Thanks for the reply.

There is food service although your meal plan does not start until Aug 21st. Anything before Saturday you will be paying a meal fee upfront or charged to your student account.

Ideally I will be moving in on the 19th, will this beat all the large move in crowd that will be obviously present on the 21st or moving in early is popular?

Thanks for the correction on foodservice! Good to know. It’d be silly to have NO foodservice for hundreds/thousands of students, now that I think about it!

I asked your very question of the Housing people. Thurs or Fri will both be significantly less chaotic than Saturday. They did not feel there was real advantage to showing up earlier in the week than that. I suspect the time of day you show up is really more a determinant of the amount of congestion you face. I would guess morning to be busier than 3pm, for instance.

That’s great to hear, thanks a lot. Yeah I think I will be moving in Thursday but possibly Friday. Again I can not say for sure since I am also moving at someone else pace.

I agree…based on what I’ve read in multiple places, Thursday/Friday (maybe as early as Wednesday if you want more time to acclimate) make the most sense. Saturday seems very late for a freshman, with crowds and so little runway until classes start. Those days before classes start are really something to be treasured and enjoyed.

If you are a late night person come in the evening… Most parents are too tired to load in then! LOL… It will be easy to get a cart…then… maybe even two!
