Anyone know what the earliest date for in coming freshmen for National Merit/ Honors College registration is for 2016?
I don’t know for 2016 but last year my son did it over the phone on May 13th or 14th. On-campus dates began somewhat later but he had a commitment for all summer beginning May 16th so this was perfect for him. He looked online and had all his classes (specific sections) ready to go and it was very straight-forward. The advisor just took his word for his AP scores so no issues registering for advanced classes (with the understanding he would be removed if qualifying scores were not later confirmed.) The advisor questioned one thing but checked with a Mechanical Engineering advisor and emailed my son within the next hour to confirm that his choice was acceptable.
BTW, classnav.ou.edu already shows Fall 2016 classes. I imagine more classes may be added and professors will be added and changed before then but it’s good for a first look.
Thanks @STEMFamily I didn’t think the Fall classes would be on line this early that’s very good to know. I think D will need to go in person to register, I read some where that she’ll be required to take a language placement test .
I just looked at the classes for the Fall. Boy some of those honors classes are very very small one that’s on D’s list only has spots for 15 students and another only has spots for 6 students! Is it very difficult to get into these classes? Do freshmen even have a chance?
I also noticed that two of the class she wanted to take first semester only are only offered once and at the same time and date. She’s going to have to make tough choices!
Any advice on how to get the classes you want? Do they ever allow over-rides/exceptions to allow extra people to register?
3scoutsmom … My D took a computerized language test when she went for advisement in May 2014 before she started fall semester. Results were available immediately so she was enrolled at the proper level. Her classes were scheduled with the assumption that she would pass all of her IB tests (and she did). As for the honors classes, they do have limited enrollment which is nice for actually taking the class. My D has taken an honors class every semester (this is her 4th) and I’m not aware of any problems registering. It may be that a class or two was full, but she has always found a class that appealed to her and met her graduation requirements. I have been very impressed with the quality of academic advisement she is getting and her ability to enroll in the classes that she needs. I think the trick is to see your adviser and register ASAP. I wish the academic advising and enrollment process when I was in school decades ago had been so painless.
Here are some things I saw from DS’ registration on OZONE and from watching class nav over the summer.
New sections of classes were added over the summer so I recommend continuing to watch if there is interest in a class that is full when she registers.
Request to be on the waitlist for a class.
Professors can change. Happened for the anthro class DS took. Part of the draw initially was the listed prof but that changed near the end of the summer. Turned out ok.
For Calc III Honors (one section offered), there were 22 students (an override of 2 above the posted class limit of 20). These extra two do not show on class nav but does show if you dig deep enough on the registered classes in OZONE. I do not know how widespread the practice is, but I also see that they are now offering 2 Calc III Honors Fall 2016 and they have increased the max size from 20 to 25. My son said he was one of about 5 freshman (he thinks) in that class.
DS had no problems registering for a sophomore level electrical engineering class. It eventually filled but only very near the start of the semester.
Except perhaps for those really small classes, it shouldn’t be a problem after this first semester as NM students can register on the very first day of early registration (I think independently of class standing).
