D said one of the classes she really wanted to take first semester is already full, mumm 1113 Understanding Music (honors) is there a chance they might open another section or is there a way to get on a wait list? If not is it better to go ahead and take this course as a non honors class or try to take it next semester as honors?
Also if a course number ends with zero how do you know how much credit is awarded for that class?
They seem to always have only one Honors section of that class. Usually there are 19 slots but a couple of times in the last few years (back to spring 2014) there are only 7 slots, including next fall. Not sure why it varies so much, but sometimes the 19 slots didn’t even fill up. I would say don’t worry about it. As a National Scholar, after the first semester she will be able to register in the first group. Just wait and take it later.
I don’t know how those “ending in zero” Honors classes work either as far as actual credit hours. Would like to hear that explained too as my son needs exactly one more honors elective credit hour due to the way the credits worked in the classes he’s taken so far. I’d also like to hear if anyone has done an Honors contract on a regular class.
@STEMFamily I found it here:
http://www.ou.edu/enrollment/course_catalog.html
“Statement of Variable Credit - The credit that may be earned in a variable-credit course (course number ending in 0) is shown after the course title. A typical entry is 1 to 3 hours.”
With variable credit courses, be very sure to get the credit amount right the first time. It is a PAIN to switch the amounts. So double- and triple-check everything.
Sorry for double posting, but I’ve done an honors by contract with a regular class. It’s generally super easy. Just do it with a professor you’ve already had a class with (and therefore know what their expectations will be) or at least a friend has had so they can tell you. Most professors will simply have you write an extra paper or two for the class. It’s flexible. It’s a great way to get some honors credit if you need it.
@WoolScarves Thanks! I knew they were available but the feeling I got from something published by the Honors College was that they were only to be used as a last resort. Since he had so many AP credits, DS (freshman) is one credit short of the needed elective credits and doesn’t really want to take a 3 credit class or a variable credit class that he isn’t interested in.
My D is going to be a freshman coming fall. I have few basic questions.
- When university calculates GPA, do they use only the courses taken at the university or will they include any courses which are going to be credited to satisfy the degree requirements (AP courses) ?
- Since we are in CA, my D got the phone session with the freshman adviser which is required before she can register for the class. But she got only in June 15 the phone session. When does OU starts the freshman advisory sessions?
- What are the banks recommended which is within the campus (she is not going to have a car) or within walking distance?
Thanks.
- AP credits count for college credits (ie contribute to class standing and toward degree requirements) but do not figure into the GPA. However, transfer credits even from Dual Credit in HS do count in the GPA.
- As a National Scholar, my son phone registered May 13 which was the first day.
- Don’t know about local banks.
- I found the immunizations on line but I think they also sent a mailing (email) from the Health Center. Here is a link:
http://www.ou.edu/healthservices/medical-services/immunizations.html
They required a signed Certificate of Compliance (link on page) along with documentation.
- I think we scanned and emailed a copy.
Thanks a lot @STEMFamily for your prompt responses.
2- my son, also a National Scholar, didn’t have his freshman enrollment appointment until July last year. It was fine, he got the classes that were important to have right away, and had options when it came to rounding out the schedule.
3- he opened accounts at the OU credit union, and that has worked fine. He also has a checking account tied to one of mine, which coupled with a debit mastercard would let me get money to him quickly in an urgent situation.
Thanks every one for your prompt reply and I appreciate it. Good to know there is a OU credit union and we will open an account there. My D is also a National Scholar, may be we are too late when we called to get an appointment and got only June 15th. That is ok, as long as she can register the courses since she has certain order / pre-req for her pre-med courses.
Checked her Immunization record with what OU is expecting and she has every thing already. So only we need to submit that to OU.
The later this summer you register, the more restricted the classes availability will be. This is unfortunate, but tyically most freshman will just be enrolling in classes that have plenty of spots, the student just might not be able to pick the best timed sections of those classes. This gets better starting for the spring, when the NMF early-enrollment privilege kicks in.
@WoolScarves can you tell us how the early enrollment will work in the Spring? Do all NMF register at the same time or is it broken into NMF seniors one day then NMF juniors the next …
My son (National Scholar as well) was dragging his feet on making his final decision to attend OU so he got a June 1 registration date.
Our credit union allows us to transfer money from our account via an app into his account in literally minutes (we have separate accounts at the credit union). Other financial institutions might also offer this benefit. I love it because whenever I have to pay for something that he’s purchasing with his debit card I just transfer money online. I also intend on getting a credit card in his name as well. I trust him to not go hog wild on my dime so this will work for us. I didn’t want to have to open an OU credit union account as he’d have to worry about closing it at a later time. There’s also a “shared branching” location that is a 7 minute bus ride from campus. That’s Plan B If he ever needs a cashier’s check or access to larger amounts of cash.
@3scoutsmom Enrollment for subsequent semesters will take place about halfway through the previous semester. So sometime in mid-late October is typical. NMF and other select groups (athletes etc.) enroll in this first wave and it is broken down by standing via credits. If you have senior standing, you register on first day, junior is the next…
This is then broken down further based on number of credits. So if you’re almost a senior by hours, you’ll be in the first wave of juniors to register and have about an hour before the second group can enroll. A lot of students end up in the most advanced enrollment group quickly. I entered with 57 credits, so as a junior I’ve been enrolling as a senior for quite some time. Honestly though, most spots aren’t competitive. Most classes I enrolled in, even in the spring of my freshman year only had a handful of students in them.
IMPORTANT NOTE!
Summer enrollment happens at the same time as when you enroll for spring courses! So if you want to take a summer course, enroll in it ASAP. The courses can be somewhat competitive for the summer, so enrolling in them early is recommended. In fact, I oftentimes register for summer classes just to save a spot in case I end up wanting to take it over the summer. There’s no harm in dropping a class before you start taking it.
@2016mililani What date your S called OU to get June 1st registration date?
@2016mililani also would like to confirm if your S is having in person appointment or phone appointment?
It appears if it is phone appointments it is not happening all days. Only certain days when looking at the iAdvise calendar slots. For example after June 15th, the next available date for phone appointment is only June 22nd.
@GoldenRock --sorry I don’t remember the date. If I had to estimate I’d say about a month ago.
I do remember we scheduled it online, not over the phone. He has a phone appointment. We’re in Hawaii so it would be super expensive to fly there just for enrollment
Perhaps they only do the phone appointments on Wednesdays. May 18, June 1, 15 & 22 are all Wednesdays…
