Early Registration

Has anyone been down to HPU for Early Registration? Did your child/you find it beneficial? We're going down this coming Friday-Saturday and was wondering if you may have any "words of wisdom" to share. Good luck to everyone on their decisions...deadline is quickly approaching.

Well, if you haven’t signed up for an Early Registration yet, I strongly suggest you do so NOW. My son is a part of the second weekend, and he’s sooo discouraged. He’s closed out of most of the classes he wanted to take and our group hasn’t even started registering yet! We were told today that they are over-enrolled for the Fall so they’re looking at making some of the single rooms into doubles. Not a good day for a newly accepted student!

Oh no that isn’t good. My daughter is signed up for the July session because we couldn’t make it this weekend due to sports and June is graduation. I hope your son is able to get a nice schedule in the end. What is his major? My daughters is Biochem

Last year my son registered during the second weekend, and was also very discouraged about classes being closed. However, don’t panic. Keep going on my stuff and search for classes after your weekend is over. They opened up extra classes last year. In addition, other kids will drop out of classes and pick others. You need to stay on top of it so you can grab a slot when one opens. My son was eventually able to get a nice schedule.

I know how you feel. I was very upset last year, and not a happy camper. His adviser had set him up with a ridiculous schedule (4 classes on some days and 1 on the others) and they spent over an hour just getting those. This was exactly what they tell you not to do. However, it all worked out in the end.

thank you for your message. So it sounds like you can change your schedule from home after the weekend you go to register? We are going so late but unable to avoid it . At a disadvantage because from ny and we graduate late june. Is your son happy with this years schedule ?

northernmom

You can change the schedule once you get home. My son is a freshman just finishing up his first year and was pretty happy with the schedule he set up for both semesters, and is very happy at High Point.

We are originally from NY, but live in NC now (about 1 1/2 hours from campus). We definitely have found it advantageous to be close to campus. Lots of my sons friends are from up north and have to pay for flights or have a long drive for campus visits, registration and school breaks.

Send me a PM if you need help figuring out how to add/delete classes. My son showed me how to do it so I could help him last year. The adviser should show them on registration day.

cathyl111: Thanks for the advice about looking after getting home AND your encouraging words. Actually his schedule worked out better than we had anticipated. Times aren’t ideal but it could have been worse I guess.

So a lot of classes are closed already? I’m so mad because I graduate late in June too and can’t do early registration til July. I wish I could just sign up for classes at home so I don’t have a disadvantage. Not fair :(

Thank you for the info on registration. We will see how it goes in July. Hopefully will all work out well.

speaking about transportation… Do you know if many students take Amtrak since it is close to the campus?

thanks for any info you may have

Being a freshmen, your first semester schedule is never ideal regardless of the college you choose. Each semester your schedule will get better and better because you will learn the loop holes and the advantages of each schedule.

I personally tell students to schedule morning classes. There is no reason why you have to have classes 5 days a week. Monday-Thurs 8-1 is ideal.

However, I like my 3 day weekends.

My son isn’t even a late sleeper, but he would never take an 8 AM class, and his friends also avoid it like the plague. It is also difficult to have classes only Monday -Thursday as many of the classes that meet on Monday and Wednesdays also meet on Fridays at High Point. That might change because they are changing most of the classes from 3 credits to 4 credits. When most classes were 3 credits, my son would take 5 classes. With the classes being 4 credits, you would take 4 classes.

However, yachts360 is correct that they do get better at planning their schedule and finding out what works best for them personally.

yankeesgirl, my older son told me (after I was angsting about the lack of availability of classes)that when he went to register first semester at a freshman at his college, it appeared that there were very few, if any seats available in alot of the classes. As it turns out, they would release 1/3 of the seats for each of the 3 registration sessions so it was misleading to look at the numbers. (I wish he had shared that with me BEFORE we registered). I’m not sure that’s what they do at HPU, but it would make sense.

My son did sign up for a M-W-F 7:50am class. He’s not a morning person but he does better in the morning than he does at 5pm when some of the classes end. He rationalized that he’ll still be able to sleep in 1+hrs later than he does now since he won’t have to drive the 1/2hr to school that he currently does, classes now begin at 7:45am and that’s 5 days a week!
The first semester may not be ideal in terms of a schedule, but look at the big picture—you’ll be taking the classes at a fabulous campus which is more than many people can say!!
