Early Reserved Appointment

My son recieved a letter today stating the following;

Congratulations! The Candidate Evaluation Board has recommended you for an appointment to the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point, the premier Maritime Institution in the Nation. Accordingly, I have reserved an appointment for you "contingent upon nomination and continued excellent work in school." When these matters are resolved, you will be appointed to the USMMA Class of 2011....

Oohrah!!!--we're excited

Congratulations, I am sure that takes a big weight off everyone's shoulders.

Congratulations CGA 82, that is a great day for your son and you should be proud. Our daughter received a similar letter about a week ago. That first day they receive the news is very exciting for them. Of course, they still have to "dot the I's" and obtain a nomination.

BIG congrats to you both! Very cool.

Does this mean he is obligated to the USMMA now?

congrats! that's always exciting. i remember when i got my appointment, my parents thought i lost my mind. i started screaming and jumped about 8 feet in the air. then i explained why i was so excited and they did the same thing i did. tell your son to keep up the good work, stay focused, and we'll see him at indoc. also, make sure he saves EVERYTHING they send him. cause chances are at one time or another he will need it. once again congrats!!!

go have a good dinner and take him to japan or some cool country

As you might suspect from the previous post, there was a great deal of celebration in this household.

Congratulations!!!!

Congratuations as well from a 2010 mom....it seem like it has been ages since we got that letter. So much has happened since then. All good stuff. Keep up the studies, and by all means celebrate. This is some achievment.

cga82..kudos to your son! Getting that appointment compares to nothing else at this level. And do save everything. Keep that file of papers, notices, dates, and "Things You Must Do" close by. Has anyone else heard that you MUST have your son/daughter's appointment notice ready to return before graduation? There is a story out there about needing that appointment to graduate. That time is drawing near for us, and I have the item safely stored in our 'fireproof' box.
A celebration is due, for sure! Our Valentine Dinner turned into a KP Acceptance Dinner, and I had no problem with that! We could hardly stop smiling.

MountaineerMom

MountaineerMom, are you pulling my leg? We have to actually give the thing back!?!? They might have to come pry it from my cold, tight, fists. Its mine! Its mine! Its mine! It holds all my memories of the Jamz opening it up & jumping from the ottoman all the way across the room to my couch where he'd bounced so high he almost hit the ceiling fan while screaming, "I'M OFFICIAL!" And I have 14' ceilings. I can't part with it! Wonder if they would notice a photocopy replacement.....

that sounds pretty stupid considering they know you were appointed, how else would you have slid past the system for 4 years? kinda rediculous, but whatever

all i have to say about that rummor if its true... kappa pie siggma

I wish some of the recent alumni would answer and put our minds at ease. For all I know, you have to show the appointment folder as part of the graduation preparation, and you get it back. All you KP grads, HELP!

MountaineerMom

Thanks everyone. We will take everyones advise and will asking for more in the near future. The KP family seems very positive, fun and helpful-I'm sure the Mids have their own terms for such. I'll save everything and make copies. KP10, he'll just have to settle for a great dinner-the cool country will have to come in a few yrs. I wish I could get that Sea Yr experience-hard work but a great experience for life!!! Nothings Official until you get there-my son recognizes that fact. Again, thanks all!

CGA, tell your son that even though there will be times where he'll think to himself, "what on earth am i doing here?!" but it is worthwhile to push through the tough times. remember all the people back home that are rooting for him, regardless of how often they talk to him. and to get involved in some activity. it's for the best that he do something, be it football, drill team, color guard, crew, rifle, what have you... once again congrats and keep it up. Acta Non Verba

is2day4him - You made me so laugh. I tapped my pen on the desk & thought, 'well, welcome to the military baby'. LOL Crazy, ain't it? Think about all the Plebe things they've made you do..... :D

cga, about the cool country thing.... It really is cool. No words to describe even a second hand experience of sea year.

btw, Recognize the class of 2010!!

Ooops. Post #17 was in response to is2day4him's earlier post, not #16. Didn't see his latest response as they were crossing in cyber space.

They offer a good many things to get involved in. Even salsa dancing. Color Guard get to do pretty sweet things. No rifle though. They have pistol. Wish they did have rifle...

we have rifle, i'm on it... it's not varisty, but it's still fun...

What are you shooting? I know they cancelled the precision rifle in 08 so this is very interesting. Good to hear about it. I heard there's a new coach on the gun range.
