In an earlier topic I saw someone mention that the Early Writes would be out in a few days. I know Williams has an Early Write Program but did not realize that Amherst did as well. Any clarification or idea when and how many historically they send out. Thank you.

Last year, D received hers around the beginning of March. As to how many they send out, I haven't seen that info anywhere. Sorry!

I got mine today!

congratulations gavroche! What part of the country do you live in? What exactly is the early write program? Thanks!

I live in Massachusetts! Not exactly underrepresented, I was absolutely shocked when I received the letter. ("Mom, have I REALLY been accepted to Amherst College??? Mom, is this seriously happening?????")

The letter says (I'm way too lazy to type it all out, but basically...)

Amherst is fortunate to have thousands of wonderful and accomplished students apply each year. A very small number, of which you are one, are expecially exciting...yada yada yada...Therefore, I am pleased to offer you a place in the Class of 2010 at Amherst College.

I'm writing to you before the established notification date to give you ample opportunity to consider Amherst as you make your college choice (reasons why Amherst is the best school in the country yada yada yada)

...[[invitation to Overnight Open House]]

etc. etc. etc. It's a fairly longish letter. I am sooo stoked. I keep checking the name on the letter to make sure it's really my own.

An early write from Amherst is quite an accomplishment!
Congrats to you and your family.

Go out and celebrate:)

Congratulations! I know what getting that letter early means. You should be getting a phone call from a prof in a little bit, as well.

"Meanwhile, you can expect contact by phone or email in late March from one of our faculty who will be familiar with your academic interests and background."

They really want me! :)

Congrats congrats

congrats gavroche. Out of curiosity, what aspect of your application do you think led to you receiving this early write?

Honestly, I was not expecting it at all!

I'm a homeschooler, I've taken a lot of classes at a college level with straight As, I have pretty solid SATs (2300 old + writing). I think, honestly, my recommendations probably helped a lot. I was able to read two of them and they were so flattering that I literally cried. Other than that...I've traveled abroad a lot on my own (to 6 different countries, including 3 third world, for about a month each) and volunteered extensively. That probably made me stand out? I have a whole lot of volunteer experience and community activism. Also, as a homeschooler, I submitted a huge transcript with a long book list and such, so they probably got a good sense of me as an applicant. Also, some lovely homeschooling parents on this forum edited my application for me, and really polished it a lot. :)

So I guess I had the uniqueness thing going on, but I was very concerned that I wouldn't even be accepted, much less early write...this is a maaajor relief. I am soooo happy. It's nice to get outside affirmation from such a good school that my self-directed learning ("homeschooler" is a bit of a misnomer, most of my studies were initiated on my own outside of my home, and I usually taught myself) was a positive thing for me to do.

Yayyy!

Congrats, gavroche! I know how thrilling it must be to find out early. :)

S got his today in VA. Postmarked 3/2. Very happy after his SCEA rejection.

whats scea?

single choice early action (to a different school).

Was it Yale?

Amherst is a class college. Are you going to the 4/17 or 4/23-24 open house or will the 3/14 chat suffice?

I'll be out of the country by early April. The letter says that if those dates are inconvenient, I may schedule my own overnight. I'm going to call them on Monday, and try to come as soon as possible.

See if they'll let you come Friday and leave Sunday. Sunday-Wednesday is pretty disruptive. For a home-schooler, though, it may not matter.

They say only Sundays-Wednesdays are possible. :-/

I'm a local, though, so I know the Amherst area very very well. ;)
