Has anyone who lives in Arizona got one yet? I'm not expecting one (I wish!), but I have a few friends who applied and they're going crazy...

i live in NY, they were postmarked on the 1st

To second wernerschulz, do any of you know the UPS tracking number? It'd just be nice to know if anything was coming or not for sure.

Also, why are some coming priority mail and some via UPS?

Internationals got UPS
Domestics got priority

ejr, when did your D receive the financial aid award two years ago? I just got the IDOC notification a few days ago, and still need to submit my 2006 tax returns.

D got early write via priority mail today, we're in Oregon. She visited last fall and really liked the campus and the students. She'll wait until April to make a final decision, but Amherst is definitely in the running. I'm interested to see how much financial aid they offer.

Congrats to everybody that got letters.

It came later - a couple weeks, I think.

....already the 4th, and no early letter...oh well...

Don't worry, they've still got ~900 acceptances to send out!

right but for internationals, whats the tracking number?

rhcp, how did you calculate that number? Did you add in the ED acceptances and the early writes? Were you basing the number on acceptances for the class of 2010? How do you know how many early writes they sent out this year? Just curious.

I've heard 250 as a figure for the number of early writes, although I couldn't tell you where I heard that. Adding in the 134 ED acceptances, that makes 284 they've already sent out. According to the article in the Amherst Student, they received ~6800 applications this year. So I took 18.5% (my acceptance rate estimate) of 6800 which makes 1258. 1258-384=874 acceptances left. Math isn't really my thing, so I probably messed up somewhere.

Anyway, it was supposed to be reassuring. We'll find out in a month either way :)

Do the most outstanding applicants get early writes? What determines who gets them?

And hell, if they already know who the most outstanding applicants are, they must know who else got in, so they may as well tell the rest of us...

There are close to 500 per class, and I just don't see them accepting 800+ more, because that would mean a huge rejection rate on the part of those accepted. Yes, there is a percentage, but I don't think it is 60% or so. In terms of how the applicants are chosen, I know there is a rating system:1-4, I believe. SAT scores earn a certain point, GPA is another, etc., with 1 being the highest. I would think that anyone scoring perfect ones with great essays who can fill a certain necessary slot, such as geographic, diversity, musician, singer, etc., will get the EW. Those are some of the things I have ferretted out through the school paper, the college website, orientation, and these threads, etc.

sorry ejr1, but >60% of those accepted do, in fact, decline to attend:

Undergraduate Admissions
Fall 2006

Number of applicants 6,142
Percent admitted 18.6%
Percent admitted who enrolled 37.8%

a few corrections...

there are closer to 400 per class, usually about 430.
the admissions office knows what kind of yield to expect. it's normally around 45%, so they admit a little under 1000 applicants, generally in the 950 region. they already admitted 133 students ED, leaving somewhere beteen 800-830 RD applicants to accept.

Amherst rates its applicants "stats" on a 7 point system, 1 being the highest, 7 the lowest. they base these rankings on standardized test scores and grades. this is not the entirety of the process, but merely an earmark do divide the students up. no students who fall into the 6 or 7 category are admitted. adimtted students ranked 4-5 are mostly athletic recruits and legacies. admitted students ranked 3 generally have substantial extracurricular appeal, such as ECs and whatnot. students ranked 1-2 are simply outstanding students/testers, with 1's being deemed as "academic superstars" who could probably be admitted based on their academic and tested performance alone.

Not sure where you are getting your numbers. According to Common data set (http://www.amherst.edu/about_amh/cds/) admit rate for 2003, 2005, 2006 was 17.8%, 18.7%,and 18.6% respectively (I don't know where 2004 data went.) Total number admitted was 1001, 1175, 1144. Yield was 41%, 37%, 38% (not 45%). The yield is of course lower if you factor out ED admits (27% for 2006).

Given that last 2 years numbers were so consistent, and that they took only 2 students off the waitlist, I'd guess they'll admit around 1150-1180 students.

^^ letter came in the mail today along with financial aid letter!!!! EARLY WRITE ACCEPTANCE!!! my face is gonna hurt from smiling so much

I got my acceptance today too. Priority mail acceptance, dated the first, arrived the same time as snail mail financial aid reminder letter, dated the 2nd...weird...

Has anybody from CA gotten one yet? It's odd the FL letter just got there today and the OR letter got there a couple days ago.
