I goal for the past year or so now has been to go to UT Austin. I live in College Station, so the thought of going to Texas A&M in the same town I was born in is not appealing to me whatsoever. I can easily get into A&M, and that is my backup school, but I truly want to go to UT Austin. I’m still deciding whether to major in Political Science or Psychology, though. Mainly Political Science, because the Texas State Capitol is only 1 mile away and I would to intern there and have hands-on experience. So, which major/college is the easiest for an applicant to get into? I heard Geosciences was an easy school to get into, and I’m kinda interested in Planetary Science and studies of that nature, but I would only apply to that school if it was significantly easier to get into than the College of Liberal Arts. So, any suggestions?
My suggestion is that you go for what you want-just getting into the school to go there is, to me, kind of a low standard to set for yourself and you will likely get stuck in a major/taking classes you are not at all interested in.
I’m also from the B/CS area and completely understand not wanting to attend TAMU. Still, you must be careful about applying. If you can easily get into TAMU, though, you are probably a good candidate for UT Austin. You need to consider the auto-admit requirements for both schools as well. Read up some more on the forums for admitted students both this school year (so far) and last school year to get a clearer picture of the kind of student UT is looking for. From what I have come to understand so far (I will be starting my first year at UT this fall and have been able to learn a lot since I applied), COLA is typically one of the easier colleges to get into. Keep in mind that Political Science is called Government at UT (to avoid confusion when you apply). Most of all, though, apply for what you WANT to do. Both Political Science and Psychology are housed in the College of Liberal Arts. If you are in fact interested in Planetary Sciences or Geosciences more than PoliSci or Psychology, try to make your application far superior to those of your peers/etc, as skills and requirements for those major/colleges are going to be different that those for COLA.
Thank you so much! Finally someone on here from the BCS area who understands how much I do NOT want to go to TAMU! Thanks for the advice!
Anytime! Feel free to message me if you have any related questions.
My son has had straight A’s in high school, a 95 average, a 33 ACT, and has taken nine AP/honors courses. He applied to the College of Liberal Arts and was denied admittance. He was in the top 11% of his class at Dallas Jesuit. He was on student council all four years and wrote for the school newspaper. He is still going to try and go to UT after getting 30 hours elsewhere, but he did not get in with the above. He did get into A&M, Georgia, Ole Miss, and a few other schools; however, UT Austin is his dream.
@Vardell Oh my gosh! I’m disappointed to hear that he wasn’t accepted, honestly. Did he appeal? He should have easily gotten in…
Many majors in COLA are relatively easier to get in compare to other engineering/business/CNS majors, people choose things like psychology and then do an internal transfer after a while. However I really encourage you try applying to your preferred major at first (in this case government), otherwise you can just be undeclared by going to the school of undergraduate student (UGS) if you want to declare your major later. Good luck!
thank you so much for replying! I wrote this about a month ago before I had any idea what I was doing, but now I have decided to choose Psychology as my major because I want to become a Psychiatrist and hopefully get my MD from Dell Medical School at UT. Thanks for the tips/advice!
