Hi Guys...
So I LOVE SC, but I'm from Boston, and also love my high school friends/family, and the only thing holding me back about 'SC is that it is so far away. Do any East Coast students have words of encouragement or tips? For example, my mom said I probably wouldn't be able to come home for Thanksgiving because tickets will be so expensive... is that true? Also, just with visiting friends, etc... because most of my friends/both of my siblings will be on the East Coast, I would be really sad if I couldn't randomly go visit my friends/siblings. Any advice?
Thanks!

I'm a freshman from Boston. And well... everyone's different. Some people go far away for college and never miss their family/friends. Others do a lot. An old school friend of mine went to SC from Boston and transfered out. I dont think that will be me, but I defnitely miss my friends and family from home a good deal. It all depends on you.

I would never let the fear of missing your old friends hold you back from a new exerience but you have to want it and put effort into making your college experience the best it can be. You get involved, meet new people. LA is an amazing place and USC is everything I thought it would be. There are times you miss your friends and times you've totally forgotten about them. You won't be able to go home as often as everyone else, but that will make you become involved on campus fully.

Good luck!

I am also a freshman from Boston and I LOVE USC!!! I couldn't be happier with my choice. In fact, even though I have plane tickets home for Thanksgiving, I don't think I'm going to go home because I love it here so much. I have not felt homesick for one instant the entire time I have been here. I think I might be an exception in that way, but what I've noticed with my friends is that some people get homesick (whether their school is ten minutes from home or a 6 hour plane ride) and some don't. Being in L.A. is so tremendously, amazingly different than being in Boston... I wouldn't trade this experience for anything. I truly feel that if you love SC, then you should go for it. I think that no matter where a person goes to college, he/she has doubts. USC is such a welcoming place that I think you will love it even more once you get here. You might have moments when you do miss being able to see friends/family, but there will be sooooo many more moments that you love being here. I'm sure you've already heard this, but it's true that this is a special time in our lives where we really do have the ability to try something new. The only advice I can give really give you is to deeply consider your choices for college, but in the end it is your gut that is probably right. Good luck!!! If you ever need anything else, feel free to PM me.

USC is SO FUN. Well, aside from all the papers and assigned readings, that is. My roommate from Texas hasn't been homesick at all. I go home every two or three weeks, so it's a different story...but I don't think I'd be homesick even if I didn't go home at all. I've had a girl on my floor who's had a rough time the first couple weeks...but most people seem generally pretty happy.

I'm a sophomore from NH, and I love USC. I wouldn't have been happy being closer to home because SC has truly given me the chance to grow and develop away from my family. I'm sure there are others who would want to be closer to home, but not me.
In terms of Thanksgiving, I looked at my schedule and used some money from my summer job to buy a ticket. I'm going home to surprise my parents. I went home last year and had a hard time because of the time difference, but I have more time this year, and it will be nice to have a few days with people that I do miss.

I'm a freshman from the Cape and like everybody else, I think USC is possibly the best thing I could have done with my life so far. Yes, being "so far" away from home can be a bit annoying at times, not having any friends from back home here, but you make so many more that it really doesn't matter. You'll see your family at Christmas and all your friends during the summer- and besides, they'll all be at their own colleges too you know, so you'll all have new lives anyways. This is a great time to explore what life has to offer, and there's no better way to grow then to come all the way across the country. I personally only get to go home for Christmas and Summer (due to the plane tickets) but it's really not that big of a deal. If you truly like USC, then you'll realize once you're here how much it has to offer to you- there's never a dull moment for me. And when you really think about it, 6 hours travelling doesn't seem like you went that "far" anyways.
