My D is looking for urban schools preferable in the NY area. Boston, Chicago, and Philadelphia are good options too. We live in the west coast and don't have much information about schools in the east coast. The majors she is interested are Theater (acting), English, Communications and/or possible Business. The ranking of interest is in the same order as listed. She is looking for a BA (not BFA) in Theater with a strong Liberal Arts education and a second major and possible a minor in the areas listed above. The school size is not as important as the quality of the education. Location is important; she would like access to the city and it can be a suburban school with good transportation to the city.

Regarding my D, her SAT score is 2070, GPA 3.7, will be a National Hispanic Scholar, 6 APs by end of Senior year, a couple of subject tests in the upper 600+ so far, will have good essays since she is a great writer, academic summer programs, has 1300+ hours of community service (most of it at a community theater in our neighborhood), and many performances in plays since elementary school. She will have 3 years in the Select Jazz Choir at her High School by graduation time. We dont qualify for need aid and are not able to pay full Ivy tuition; she qualifies for some merit aid and would like to take advantage of it, if possible.

I appreciate your input to help my D with this very important decision in her life.

You may want to check into some of the previous theater threads on CC where they discuss the relative advantages and disadvantages of theater programs in the major metropolitan schools like NYU versus programs in smaller locales where one is more likely to get more parts and more experience. One school I would definitely check out would be Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY. About 3.5 hours north of NYC it has a excellent programs in theater, english and business and provides some merit money to top students.

she should visit brown. it's not near NYC but she might love it. she has excellent stats and might very well be admitted. on 2nd thought, i just saw what you said about aid...never mind, there are plenty of schools that would offer her the merit money she needs.

If she wants urban I'll second Emerson in Boston for Comm., overlooking Boston Common park, as well as Boston University for their school of Communications and BU's SMG college for business. Suracuse and NYU, of course, and perhaps Temple and Northeastern as "sure bets" --although she can probably get into the other schools easily. All of these colleges offer merit aid and she is on the bubble stats wise for a lot of it while a sure bet merit wise for some of it---URM status will help. Her stats might be low for Columbia but less so for Barnard, its nearby affiliate, if she doesn't mind all girls. But I doubt they offer merit money. Skidmore is great too but not in a real city like NY or Phila.

MotherMoo: Boston University sounds like an excellent fit for your daughter's needs. Marisa Tomei among others did theatre at B.U., and English, Communications, and Business are all decent-to-excellent there, depending on whom you get as profs. Boston is at your doorstep, and New York is just an Amtrak ride away.

Thank you all for your input. We are taking notes and will be researching the schools you are suggesting. My D is attending the pre-college program at CMU which ends on August 4th. We're planning to travel and visit the east coast schools at that time. Kill two birds at once! Again, thank you for your input.
