I am incoming freshmen this fall and I'm debating whether to stay in East Lo or Pentland?

I've visited both dorms before so I know Pentland is just beautiful all around but I know East Lo isn't half bad either. I have also heard about the whole East Lo being social and Pentland not... I have a friend who used to live in Pentland and I went to visit her a couple times so I know how it is to be in Pentland and from the beginning I saw myself there but at the same time I kinda want a change and that whole dorm hall experience.... the only thing that does kinda bother me is the whole sharing the shower and bathroom with the whole hall as oppose to just a couple of people...

If you can afford pentland, I would say go for it. East Lo is alright, its not too bad and pretty social but the sharing bathroom thing really sucks.

Yeah, I thought it over and I guess in time I will get over
sharing the bathroom/showers. I decided that I really do want the “true”
dorm hall experience. It’ll be a good change…hopefully. Plus East Lo does
seem like it will be a bit more social.

Thanks!

by the way… how are the rooms?
I hear they’re somewhat big??

Well, it depends what you think big is. My room at home is smaller than my dorm room… but I didn’t have to share it -_- iono… I’m used to this… so I have no complaints.

It’s true about the restroom thing though. Community showers won’t kill you. Remember to wear flip flops in the restroom at all times, and you’ll be OKAY.

You’ll definitely meet a lot more people living in east lo though. Or… at least I think so. I wasn’t able to get to know my hall mates very well because I’m involved with other stuff… but the hall mates that didn’t join anything are pretty close (:

why is pentland hills considered anti-social? it also has a hall like the other dorms, the only difference i noticed was that it wasnt co-ed. i really want to go to pentland hills for the nice facilities, but id reconsider if itd make college boring.

East Lo is def really really active in community stuff, from what I saw today. Pentland is really nice looking, but i didn’t see much “spirit” there, but it’s definitely good for someone who wants to focus on studying more.

@ pnoyadawg; its considered anti social cuz the halls are HELLA small. i think there’s only like 3, 4, or 5 rooms per hall, and there are only like 8 halls in a building. You have to walk outside the hall to like the lobby or something to talk to people in your building… while everyone in traditional dorms just kick it in their hall, which has like 25 rooms or more.

It’ll be a very different experience… seriously.

Pentland Hills isn’t all that bad. If you make an effort to go out to the other halls and hangout with the other people in the other halls, it’ll become very social. Trust me, I live in Pentland Hills and it’s REALLY loud every night. Our doors are always open so anyone on the floor can go in and out, much like what the traditional halls (Lothian/A&I) do. I like Pentland Hills because of the private bathrooms, since it’s much more convenient for me as a girl. But that’s just my preference. I didn’t like showering in East Lothian (I went to SUHP, so I lived in East Lothian for 2 nights) because it’s quite inconvenient for me, since there’s different stalls next to one another and well I just didn’t like it. My friend and I had to shower at least an hour or two before the other girls because there weren’t anyone around. So it’s easier to change and such. That’s why I chose Pentland Hills, although the most expensive of the three dorms, I think it’s still good, especially for girls who like privacy.

I’m currently a high school senior, going to UCR next year, so I have no opinion based off firsthand experience, but I don’t think the bathroom situation would be that bad in a traditional res hall compared to suite style. In a suite style dorm, there’s about 8 people and two showers (right?), so there’s really one shower per four people. In a traditional res hall, there’s four showers to about 20 people, so that workds out to one shower per five people. It’s almost the same. Plus, with four showers, it’s unlikely that every single one will be taken very often, AND, sharing with 20 people, if you happen to be the kind of person who takes forever in the shower (like me), it’s harder for people to place the blame on you in a traditional res hall compared to suite style. I applied for east lo cause of the whole social thing, and the fact that I actually prefer the bathroom situation, and the fact that pentland doesn’t have its own dining hall.

you probly don’t have to worry about the bathroom situation at the traditional dorms because I heard that since people have different schedules, (some people go to class at 9am, others go at like 11am…) they shower in different times. All im worrying about for traditional dorms is that it might get a little too noisy in the middle of the night if it becomes too social…
