Easy A's at Duke?

Spanish 76 is NOT an easy A -- there's soooo much busy work in that class.
And I don't think Stat 101 is either.

My easiest classes -- MMS 195 (but its special topics, and my prof is no longer teaching at Duke, so that's not terribly helpful, but I'm sure the other ones will be easy); Soc 155 (Organizations & Management with Keister); an English class whose number I forget but is offered in the spring... American Dreams, American Movies something along those lines taught by Torgovnick and Malone.

the problem with finding "Easy As" is that these classes aren't always taught by the same profs, so it may be a joke one semester and then a lot of work the following one, so take it with a grain of salt.

if you are trying to find an easy A at duke the best advice i could give is to follow the athletes--they hear about easy profs (ditto to what bluestar said about how some courses are really easy one semester then totally difficult the next based on the prof). Thinking over my transcript, I can't really come up with any easy As, except maybe those I got on my Duke-in study abroad program (though I took a pretty challenging course load, admittedly). So basically, your best bet is to talk to athletes (the not so bright ones, that is--there are plenty of really smart, motivated athletes at Duke) or to go on a study abroad program like Duke in Madrid.

Someone earlier asked about Stats 101.
To be frank, Stats 101 is typically not an easy course at Duke (though, relative to the Calculus courses here, it's definitely easier). The intro Stats teachers have had rather horrible reviews (Stangl, etc.). Myself, I found the problem sets to be incredibly annoying, the labs utterly worthless, and the tests hard. I passed with a B+, while the class average was a B-. There were a good number of Cs. If you want an easy stats course, maybe you should ask someone about Stats 10 instead.

As for someone who asked about PubPol classes. Er, well, they generally tend to be rather challenging. With regards to the core PulPol courses, they are graded a bit harsher than the electives (PubPol 128 = death). As for the electives, it just depends on the teachers.

But yeah, the easiest of classes is based on professors from my experiences. Well, except I've heard CulAnth 94 is easy across the board. Best A+ I ever made haha. Overall, most Sociology classes are pretty easy to get an A in, as long as you do the work.

For anyone considernig STA 10: Many social science majors (psych & economics for sure) require higher-level statistics and STA 10 would not fulfill that requirement. You would be better suited taking the 100 level course right away.

Also, just because a professor might not have the best reviews online, that doesn't mean you will have a bad experience with that professor. Some professors have low ratings just for being challenging with higher standards, and others get high ratings for being easy and giving very little work.

If you're looking for Easy As, you'll probably most likely find them in electives, as you probably know. Introductory classes especially for departments with large numbers tend to be weed-out, and definitely NOT easy (for example, from what I've heard Math 31/32, Econ 51, and language classes are not easy to get As in because in Math and languages there is so much busy work and the Econ 51 teacher is usually crazy hard).
My easiest class thusfar at Duke has been Econ 180 (Law and Econ), which might seem like it would be hard, but my professor (who won't be teaching it next semester, sorry) made it so easy. First of all he was a pretty good lecturer, but our entire grade was based on 4 quizzes, a midterm, and a final. He ended up dropping your lowest three quiz scores and for all the tests, all of the questions basically came from examples so the average on those tests were like 94-95. Again, not all professors will do this (even within the same class title).
Some common rules of thumb:
*Engineering classes are by far NOT easy.
*Bad lecturer classes are NOT easy.
*If you're looking for easy science classes Dino Bio and Rocks for Jocks (don't know the numbers, but they're pretty easy to figure out) are the way to go.
*ASK UPPERCLASSMEN.
*All of the above rules can be negated if you enjoy the subject. TAKE WHAT YOU ENJOY.

BAA 93 is sort of an easy A. the tests are kind of tricky, but there is essentially no out of class work except for studying for exams.

Wait, what's BAA 93? Also, is Intro to Cultural Anthropology considered challenging?

Rocks for Jocks is EOS 11 - very easy and multiple choice tests only.
BAA 93 is biological anthropology.

Thanks law_applicant.

And Dino Bio is BIOLOGY 47.

Intro to CulAnth (CulAnth 94) is not challenging. If you just study the material, it's a surefire A.

so bio anthropology isn't too bad? Is there a recommended professor for that course?

any other psych classes besides 119 & 116?

BAA was not an easy A with Kivell and Linder teaching it. It's supposedly easier with Glander.

chem 83. i went to even fewer classes than lance thomas and scheyer yet it was still easier than any high school course i took.

i took baa 93 with glander....not hard. ive heard that other teachers are more difficult. glander is moody though

Psy 97 is not an easy A.
I just found out I got a B in it.
I took the class with Needham, so others may be easier- I'm not sure.

Can someone assess the difficulty of my schedule for this upcoming semester? Here's what I've got as of now:

Sociology 10 (Kall)
CulAnth 94 (Starn)
PolSci 49S (Spragens)
Writing 20 (Fletcher)

I took Writing 20 with Fletcher last year.
It's a really interesting class.
At first, he's a tough grader on papers but if you take in the advice he gives you on papers- your grade will go up.

I'm actually taking Sociology 10 with Kall next semester.

Mondo- was Fletcher's class "Time Travels?"

and as for Sociology 10, omg collegeconfidential reunion lol
