Hi, I’m trying to transfer out of BU at the end of the coming year. My GPA is currently only a 3.32. I am studying Journalism with a minor in Business. Since I want to better my gpa before trying to transfer out and only have 2 semesters to do so, I wanted to ask if anyone can recommend easy courses to take at BU. Also, which Com201 and Wr150 professors are easy graders.
Thank you!
If you are trying to transfer up the adcoms will not appreciate you taking bird courses and it will hurt your chances. So you are paying $48,000 this year to breeze through. Good investment!
@birkenspanner I would recommend taking courses that are easily transferable or else you’ll end up taking classes for the sake of them not transferring.
Oh dear. Well, though I’m not loving the spirit of your question (I loved the challenge of courses at BU… and also being a journalism major you’re kind of already taking some of the easiest classes at BU! I should know! I was a JO major!), I’m going to answer it seriously. Hard to know exactly how to advise without knowing what credits you’ve already completed, nor how you define “easy” (generally you’re going to do better in classes you’re naturally inclined towards, so what was “easy” to me may not be to you), but my 2 cents:
The easiest/most fun/valuable course I took at BU was ES140 Natural Disasters. No idea if it’s still available regularly but it was THE BEST. It was easy because it was consciously geared towards non-science majors (most of us were COM kids), the professor was fantastic, and the tests were straight forward (mostly multiple choice–what he taught in class was on the test; no surprises). Labs were fun too–we watched disaster movies and analyzed them. The funny thing is: it was one of my easier A-s but it also has been really really sticky. Thirteen years later I still use knowledge from that class. Not easy: ES201. I bombed that class. Ha.
Otherwise… light social science classes tend to be “easier” if you’re taking classes in the 100 range, though I may say that b/c I find psychology & sociology interesting. Film classes are “easy” if you’re any good at media analysis… but again it boils back to “are you good at writing”? That’s what made classes easy to me–I enjoy persuasive writing so any class with light reading/consuming media + writing about it = an A range grade for me or a B+ (usually). Also, often the classes I got the best grades in were not the easiest classes, but the most challenging–because I worked that much harder and produced better work. I purposely loaded my schedule heavy with writing/analytical classes b/c I pulled better grades in those (and enjoyed them more) than ones with large lectures, textbook reading, and multiple choice exams.
Who are your options for COM201? You’d be best served asking older COM friends–they’ll know. Ditto WR150. These are courses usually taught by a revolving door of adjuncts (with some exceptions) so students who JUST completed those courses will have the best recs. There aren’t that many current or recent COM kids kicking around CC, from what I’ve seen.
