Easy SAT math Question

This was question number 5 on a practice exam but I DONT GET IT!!!!

If 3(CUBE ROOT) of Square root of (X+1) +3 = 5, then X = ?

Answer is 7.

What's under the squre root? (X+1) or (X+1)+3?

Liebenasuka, it would have to be (x+1)...

Here's the steps to solve this problem:

Isolate the expression with x in it (subtract three from both sides)

Cube both sides.

You should now have an equation that looks like this: x+1 = 8.

Solve for x

There you go...

If you have a Ti-89, use the solve( function.

If you have a Ti-83: MATH > 0: Solver... > set equation to zero > set X = * to the nearest value you think it is (the solver only displays 1 answer, so if you have pos/neg answer, this works) > *Alpha Enter (Solve)

There you go. Any one variable equation answered by your calculator>

^True, but if you know the math it is a lot quicker imo (I am usually a huge fan of using a calculator, but this problem is different!)

quix, pardon me for it's not my place to say,but dude,u really need a big improvement in your math basics

Tell me something i don't know man. There are just a few things i have to clear up here and there, and your help and the help of other CCers is invaluable to me. Im taking the SAT in oct and i really want to clear up the questions i have trouble with, and im sorry if im a bother.

^You're not a bother! Don't be afraid to ask questions Quix...it's how people learn. Good luck with your sat prep.

However, I agree that you should brush up on your math basics. Any good sat prep book should have an sat comprehensive math review. Review that carefully and your score should go up.

AeroEngineer3141, i completely agree with you.
im a very pro math user ,the calculator wise lol...
when i see a problem that involves a "=" sign, and it has only 1 variable, i jump straight to my calculator, solve for that variable.im very good at punching buttons,so im fast and accurate, after i get the solution,i plug back in to see if it make sense.
its not that im weak in alg, i just want to avoid all the squaring and factoring crappy mistakes.

this TI 83 solver method applies to MANY math problems on the SAT.
for example:
(X^3-2x)/(4x+4)=5/2
i made this up, but many people probably try to find the quickest way possible to factor this and that. i think that's plainly stupid.
what i do: go straight to my TI, punch (X^3-2x)/(4x+4)-2.5=0, solve for X.
mental math counts here, lol i dont like punching 5/2,so i put 2.5. u also gotta be careful with the parentheses. if u're not adept at ur calc, this method is certainly not for u.
