Easy to switch majors?

Niece accepted, class of 2018. She specified Bio as incoming major. Would it be possible for a student to switch from College of Sciences to Undergrad Mendoza at anytime during 4-year undergrad, if interests change? Thank you very much for your thoughts.

At ND, all freshmen are enrolled in the First Year of Studies. You officially declare a major sophomore year. As a freshman, your coursework generally consists of First Year as well as University requirements. That being said, prospective engineers will take different math classes than humanities majors would, science pre-professionals would take different science classes than prospective business majors would, etc. I would just advise that if she is pretty sure she wants to enter Mendoza, that she tailor her first year to whatever the requirements for Mendoza are. In a word, to answer your question, she’s not in a particular college yet, so there would be relatively little penalty in changing her mind. Hope this helps.

Thank you ejccic. One more followup: do students sometimes switch during Jr year, and if so, would switching into Mendoza be an impossibility that late into an undergrad career? Are programs in Mendoza impacted such that they restrict the number of internal transfers?
Thanks again ejccic. Sorry for the dumb questions.

Easy to switch if it’s early enough on and you have taken the right classes. Sometimes you can end up delaying your graduation if you switch too late or don’t take the appropriate lower level classes required to take the higher level classes needed to graduate with a particular major (more of an issue in science and engineering where classes build on each other and sometimes need to be taken in sequence). The only restriction I am aware of that Mendoza has is that transfer students cannot transfer in. Transferring during junior year might be possible, but I would imagine it would delay your graduation, especially since many of the classes required to graduate with a business degree are only available to those with a declared major or minor in Mendoza.

Thank you shellzie!
