Eating Suggestions

We are visiting Cornell on Monday. Any suggestions for eating Sunday night for dinner and Saturday for lunch? Where are the best places that will give us a really good feel for the city and the college?

Taste of Thai in the Commons and Miyake (Japanese) in Collegetown are the two places I can really mention for dinner. Stella’s in Collegetown isn’t bad either and I’ve heard good things about Madeline’s in the Commons.

I couldn’t tell you much about Lunch. Other than Miyake, I can’t really think of anywhere else.

Taste of Thai is okay, but they have terrrrible service. I’d recommend Stellas, Taverna Banfi (it’s in the Statler on campus), Madelines, and Miyake if you like sushi.

For lunch, DEFINITELY go to the Farmer’s Market on saturday. Loads of ithacans and CU students alike flock there for the awesome and cheap food. It’s also a beautiful setting right on the lake, and you can sample some finger lakes wines while you’re at it. I think the Farmer’s Market gives you a great sense/feel of what the Ithaca community is like.

As far as food goes, definitely try Macro Mama’s, and the cambodian stand and the cuban stand are both VERY good as well.

If you like Thai food, you have to go to Tamarind. Taste of Thai is the Ithaca establishment but it can’t even begin to touch Tamarind’s quality. When someone says that a restaurant in Ithaca is good, there’s usually an implied qualification: “for Ithaca standards.” Tamarind is good period. The Tom Yum is ridiculous.

Plum Tree in Collegetown is considered the best sushi in Ithaca. I dunno about summertime, but during the school year it’s always packed. It’s a little expensive for their quality of sushi but it’s Ithaca so what can you do.

If you want ambiance, try the Boatyard. It’s right on the lake and has some pretty cool views. The food is good and it’s standard American/seafood. Good for dinner.

The Heights ($25-50/person) and John Thomas Steakhouse ($40-75/person) are classier, steak and wine options but are probably the priciest in Ithaca. Madeline’s is similar but less expensive.

Viva Taquera down in the commons is hands down the best Mexican food. It’s like a California-style place where you can get quick tacos or burritos or whatever. Good for lunch.

I second Plum Tree having better sushi, but that’s just about the only thing it beats Miyake in (other than slightly lower prices).

Our family likes Maxie’s Supper Club. Very good Cajun food and… oysters!

Great suggestions! Thanks!

for dinner madeline’s is my favorite its kind of italian/asian fusion with the most amazing desserts (i’m a dessert person), miyakes for sushi, aladdins for middle eastern/mediterranean, taste of thai for thai

for lunch if you want to sit down carraige house is the best! if you want something quick i’d say pita pit or collegetown bagels.

We really like the Boatyard

you HAVE to go to the Moosewood! it’s amazing! they cook mostly vegetarian food, but even if you’re not a vegetarian it’s delicious.
