I plan on majoring in Biology.(Because I wanna do Genetic engineering in graduate school,no schools offer Genetic engineering as a major)

However,my EC is mostly related to Music, which has nothing to do with Biology. Therefore,is it going to hurt my chance on getting accepted to schools like Cornell,JHU and NYU?

Colleges don’t care whether your ECs match your prospective major. Colleges know that most college students change majors at least twice. In addition, it’s normal for students as well as adults to have hobbies and outside interests that differ greatly than their day jobs.

You’re not a one-dimensional person. Even career biologists and physicians have interests outside of their work – almost everyone does. Why would anyone, especially colleges that seek to admit real people, expect you to only be interested in things related to biology?

No, it won’t hurt your chances to do things related to music. It won’t even hurt to indicate that you have a great love for music and you might double major in that or something.

In addition, most colleges don’t factor ECs into admission. The few colleges that do are the most competitive ones – places like HPYS – that have such an overabundance of high stat applicants that the colleges can afford to pick and choose from among those to create an active, diverse student body.
