ECs and major don't match....rejection?

My ECs and the major that I selected do not match at all. I read it in somewhere that CALS (I applied to CALS) looks for students who have ECs that match with their major, but that's not the case for me....:( Am I going to be much more likely to get rejected?

it doesn’t mean you’ll get rejected, it just means you’re not doing anything to increase your chance of acceptance.

i submitted personal artwork just to show colleges i was into other things besides my desired bio major, but when i called in to ask them if that was advisable, they said not to bother if i wasn’t going to be an art student. i would say submit everything about you. they consider a ton of stuff, so don’t be too sad about it. ultimately, it’s just about whether or not they think you fit in at cornell… not whether or not every kid here who is doing math has been in math contests or an astronomy major has gone to science camps every year.

If you wrote a good essay explaining why you chose your major, then you should be fine. However, if it looks like you chose your major completely out of the blue you will most likely be rejected… sorry. Cornell’s been known to reject applicants that don’t match the school they applied to even if they are well qualified for a different school.

It may be a problem> I was reading in a book that more and more selective schools like EC’s that are in line with your major - it helps them to know that you really like it before admitting you to a major that you seem to know little about, or have no experience in.

your question can be more directly answered if you shed some light as to what your statistics are other than your ECs- dont need to give us every score or grade- but obviously this matters most.

the valedictorian of my high school the year above me got into all the top schools- HYP, mit, stanford, etc. because he had essentially perfect grades and perfect standardized test scores… he had just about 0 ECs… guess that didn’t matter that much. that is an extreme example but i’ve never quite bought into the whole “we are holistic” thing just because i have seen that the holistic cases are really a minority. another example is how another classmate of mine got into emory as a poli sci major with his only ec’s in the healthcare field…

@BlueDevilBBall, Cornell is different from HYP. Cornell has 7 different schools and there is an annoying transfer process between them, so you need to pick the right one. Besides, Cornell is NOT a HYP anyway. Cornell wants to make sure you “fit.” I’m sure some people with perfect scores do get in, but I’m sure said person you’re talking about also wrote a KILLER essay.

@BlueDevilBBall… from other threads I see you’re a student at Cornell so I guess you know more than I do in that respect. You still don’t know all of that students credentials.

so you’re saying a great essay can override a complete lack of ECs? i dont think that would be what put him over the edge. i think it was his gpa and sats.

my point is, if you’re on the bubble and are right on the line of cornell’s average in terms of grades and standardized test scores, having solid ECs will be huge. no doubt about that. if the OP has stellar grades and scores, s/he will likely be set. if the OP feels as though cornell is a ‘reach,’ essays, letters, and ECs will matter much more obviously. you’re right, i don’t know the student’s credentials. wasn’t that what i was saying in the first place?

cornell’s student population and offerings in terms of all the schools are great, but i don’t see why anyone thinks this is out of the ordinary. i believe harvard has 13 different schools. you need to pick the right one there too,

My stats aren’t that good for Cornell :frowning: I go to a regular public high school in NY with a 92 Unweighted GPA. My weighted GPA is not good at my school because I did not take any weighted courses in my Freshman year, and only 2 Honors in Soph year. I’m still in top 10% though.

Scores:
Chem:700 Math II: 730
SAT I—> 610 CR and 770 Math
I don’t know if Cornell will consider it, but I’ve been in the US for 4 years only.

I think my essay is okay…I actually specfically wrote about what achivements the CALS students had made in the past and how their achievements attracted me. (and their achievements are in the exact same field as my major.)

610 CR for an “english as the second language student?!” there are people who have spoken/written english since they can remember that can’t break 400. some that are really smart that can’t break 600. they will consider that.

I’m an Asian male and 1st generation.

Yeah shinywing, we can’t fully vouch you’ll get in, but it’ll have the admissions officers taking a closer look at what you have. I’d stress the ‘change’ for me from whatever country you’re from to the US just to make your SAT cr ‘stand out’ more ~_-

your EC/major conflict won’t hinder your admission. don’t fret over this.

I’m prepared for my rejection letter -_- with my poor scores and “eh” GPA…
My 610 CR and SAT II scores totally kill me TT
