Econ 101A and Math 54

Does anyone have an estimate of how many hours per week, outside of class, it takes to be successful in Econ 101A and Math 54? I just got my 101A text today in the mail and panicked when I looked inside, haha.
I would say I'm reasonably competent at math.

It varies. For me, Economics 101A became easy once I had mastered the mathematical ideas. After that, the rest is just common sense with some calculus. But others I knew struggled and needed to study frequently. Similar for Math 54: Some people worked hard, others hardly worked.

So it is difficult to say. It all depends on you. What other classes have you taken and how much work did they take for you? That might give us an indication.

I’ve taken Math 1a, 1b equiv, 53, and Stat 134.

Basic calc was pretty easy.
53 was really difficult for about 3 weeks, then became second nature until we got to vector calc (but then again, not even the GSIs could really explain the last two sections).
134 was really tough, but that was mainly due to all the other coursework i had. I eventually got most of the material and didn’t do horrible in the class.

I heard from my roommate that 54 is pretty mechanical for the first half of the semester, and then differential equations comes along and everybody fails. Is that accurate?
