Econ at UCSD

Can any current Econ students describe whats it like? I got accepted to Warren College, so I am trying to decide between UCSD, UCSB and if I get accepted to Berkeley and UCLA.

Do your homework and you’ll be good. It’s pretty straightforward.

But the easiness of the class also depends on what professor you have.

They say that they have some Nobel Laureates there that teach, is that true? Also what types of research is available for econ?

Yeah we have some Nobel Laureates (I think around three or four currently, and others are Fellows) that teach upper division courses.

As for research, there’s lots of opportunities if you take the initiative. You can go to the research center to find something but you can also opt to take the essay seminar that let’s you create your own proposal and research, though this is only if you have appropriate prereqs.

The nobel laureates typically don’t teach much. If you ever see them teaching a class YOU WANT TO GET IN THAT CLASS AND MAKE FRIENDS WITH THEM.

The econ department is really good here; I’m really enjoying the management science major. The teachers are pretty approachable and they’re all geniuses. Management requires the 20 series so you should have a pretty good handle on math coming in and be prepared to do a lot of it for the first 2 years at least. For almost any type of econ you might be interested in UCSD strictly dominates UCSB.

UCLA is more of a business school and might have better finance but UCSD holds it’s own now that we have the rady school offering business and accounting classes. If you get into Berkeley you probably want to go there. They have some amazing professors there and the schools name carries a lot of weight. If you are planning on going to grad school I would pick UCB or UCSD for sure.

For econ 1, which would you choose? Xie or Newhouse? Thanks
