Econ in the Midwest, is Beloit a good choice?

I'm currently attending University of Dubuque, it's a garbage school. I have a 3.2, by the end of the semester I'll have an accumulated 3.5 or better. I want to get an Econ undergrad and hopefully move on to U Chicago for grad work in Econ. I'm from Beloit, so attending Beloit College would be a very socially stimulating enviroment for me. I am wondering about how academically recognized they are for Econ since I plan to move on to grad work at somewhere as prestigious as UC. Is Beloit a good choice, or is there a better option specifically in the midwest? Thanks.

Yes i feel there are better options. Ohio State has a top program and is defiantely a great spcial scene. University of Michigan is awesome as well. Indiana is great for economics and again awesome social scene. Michigan State is just as good but is competing heavily with UMich and Umich no doubt has the advantage. Also U Wisconsin is great. Mayby even Penn State which is in Western Penn. Purdue is another great option. These schools although public, are top schools and you wont even have to transfer cause they are very prestigous. You can surely land a top job in any of them. Plus they are a lot cheaper than private schools such as Notre Dame or UChicago.

if you want private schools, I suggest Notre Dame, northwester and U Chicago but beware of the price. they are really expensive and I personally believe u can land just as good a job in a school such as UMich than those. most Public Big Ten Schools are awesome and i suggest those.

Beloit has an excellent reputation with good grad school placement. I don't know how strong their econ department is, though. I suggest looking over interesteddad's list of top econ PhD producers. The midwestern LACs on the list are Grinnell, Carleton, Oberlin, and Macalester.

I wouldn't feel that comfortable in such a large university. I'd prefer a campus of roughly 2000.

then you'd probably prefer an LAC.

yup in that case I agree with Brand. Beloit and Oerlin are good matches. Wat about Case Western? Notre Dame is also nice. its bit bigger than ur preference but strong sence of community. Loyola Chicago is another good school for u. in the heart of Chicago and would be nice to transfer to Northwestern from loyola.

In my opinion, econ is very good at Beloit. However, there is a heavy math requirement. As long as you are pretty strong in math (2 semesters of calc, linear algebra and differential equations -- the requirements when I was there), then you should be okay.

If he wants to get a Ph. D in econ, he will definitely need to be strong in math anyway.
