Econ - Umich vs Northwestern

hey ppl..
my friend an i have been quarelling for abt a week now about which school is better for an economics major - Umich vs Northwestern.. he got into northwestern and i am into Umich.. none of us have any aid or scholarship and neither is into the honors program as of yet..
Which one is the better offer ??

lol. i wonder what Alexandre would say. :)

northwestern, i believe

From what and investment banker family friend said, for Econ Northwestern is definitely the better choice if you want to go to Wall Street or elite Grad schools.

but in terms of undergrad experience and quality of education ??

Northwestern may not be as "big" of a party school as Umich, but it definitely has a great party scence and intense nightlife and is close to Chicago. Also, Northwestern is in the BIG 10 along with UMich. Both of these schools have great school spirit, but Northwestern has more student to Professor Interaction and is smaller and overall the stat's for Northwestern overall are much higher, if you plan on being around very intellectual people and academically Northwestern may be stronger so if you have the choice go to Northwestern. Don't get me wrong Umich is one of the top schools im consdiering, but because I probably don't have the stats for Northwestern.

Lampard, Northwestern and Michigan both have excellent (top 10 or so) Econ departments, with Northwestern having the slightly better one. Overall however, Michigan and Northwestern are pretty much equal. I personally chose Michigan over Northwestern because I prefered Michigan's campus atmosphere to Northwestern's and I prefered Ann Arbor to Evanston.

In terms of jobs and graduate school placement, I'd say the two universities are roughly the same. In terms of prestige and academic reputation, both are considered tops by the academic (almost identical peer assessment scores) and the corporate worlds.

Finally, in terms of student quality, Northwestern has the advantage, but it is not as significant as you'd think. If Michigan reported its mean SAT scores the same way Northwestern did, Michigan's mean would be roughly 30-40 points lower than Northwestern, which is not very significant.

When it comes to those two excellent schools, I recommend you try and visit the two campuses and decide based on personal preference. You really cannot go wrong.
