Econ vs Finance

I've heard a lot about students having a higher chance of getting accepted into a school if they pick a less popular major. I'm thinking about majoring in either finance or economics. I was wondering if majoring in econ would give me a better chance at getting into specially NYU. I've heard finance is very popular major and getting into Stern is very difficult.

I don’t think so…becoz a lot of freshmeats dont start with the major they chose
You’re accepted to that school…despite ur major
I think u hav to pick the major again when u register (after they send u an acceptance letter)
dats the procedure for another college
i think it works the same way for NYU

Stern is very difficult to get in
becoz its one of the toppest business school in the states
but i think u can study econ in CAS too

If you are applying to Stern, declaring finance v economics will not affect your acceptance rate. You have the option to switch majors after being accepted.

@centerklaus
your right I just checked and you can study econ at CAS. then would I have a better chance of getting into CAS than Stern?

CAS is definitely easier to get in
but if u want to major in other related subjects, like finance
u should try Stern
or maybe u can get into CAS first
and try to transfer to Stern in ur sophomore year
its easier to transfer within the same University

^ That is actually not true. It’s extremely hard to transfer into Stern regardless of which school you are currently at.

@winniehuang
i thought it would be easier o___O
they use the same criteria for transfers from the same school and different schools?

The only advantage someone transferring to Stern internally vs. someone from another university is that there’s the guarantee that all of their credits will count toward the NYU degree. Few transfers make it in, either internal or external.

Also: declared major is irrelevant and does not affect your admissions decision at all.
