Economics vs Business Management Economics

Which would you say is the better degree? I'm transferring from a CCC, and I'm kind of split on which way to go. I have all/ am currently completing all the reqs for Business, which fulfills all the requirements for Econ as well.

I've also heard you can make quite a bit more with an Economics degree then with a business degree. My economics professor also showed us this Majors That Pay You Back ? PayScale College Salary Report 2012-13

Not sure how credible that is, but basically its saying that a history or philosophy degree is more valuable then a business degree now haha.

Anyways, any advice?

They are both pretty much the same. The Business Management Economics (BME) major isn’t an actual business major, it’s econ + accounting courses. Go to the ucsc economics website and check the required courses for both of the majors and you’ll see the major overlap.

As a person who has graduated and worked in finance/consulting/tech companies, I can tell you right now that your major won’t mean anything. With that said, pick whatever major you think you will enjoy the most.

A regular economics degree is designed to prepare you for a masters degree in economics, while the BME degree is more for people who are interested in accounting/tax. It doesn’t mean that a regular econ degree won’t get you a job in accounting and vice versa. You can even graduate with a history degree and go into a business related job. Just ignore all those salary reports and take the major where you enjoy the classes the most. You’ll probably do better in classes you enjoy and that GPA boost will help you in the long run.

Ah thank you, very interesting that the BME is not really a business degree. It does explain whys its a BA and not a BS. I enjoy Econ classes more then Accounting classes so far, so I am leaning toward an Economics degree.

Might help you better

Ah thanks!

Do accounting firms recruit from UCSC?

Yep, accounting firms actively recruit from UCSC. However, this doesn’t mean that if you graduate from UCSC that you are guaranteed a job at one of the Big 4 firms. Still got to keep a high gpa and have a nice resume
