ECS/Clubs/Leadership?????

I’m involved in a couple of EC’s and hold leadership in only 2. And, there not high of positions (nothing like president). However, I know that leadership is a big deal in top schools like CMU. But, I had a question. A club that I was in had officers that only came to the first meeting to get elected. Although, they never came back to the other meetings. So, I asked the adviser if he would let me take over the jobs of the secretary, so I could help out. Could I write secretary on my application? Would I have to ask my adviser if that was ok? How do they colleges check up on things like that?

anyone................................................

go ahead and write secretary...you basically are the secretary. IF these people really don't do anything like u say they do, the adviser has probably noticed and won't mind if u give urself the title.

but do how do they check up on these things? I'm worried that if they do check up on it and they see that I never really got voted into the position that they'll get rid of my application.

Make sure it is OK with your advisor. He will most likely OK it but otherwise it could and probably would come back and bite you. For example your GC will want to know as well so she can write about it or mention it in her letter or conversations with ad coms. Good luck.

there's no way it could come back and bite u if u do what arizonamom and I tell u. You see, if your adviser knows the other kids are slacking and u're the only real help then she/he won't mindu listing that position. Just be sure to let ur adviser and GC know what u're doing.......then if and when a college calls u're GC investigating ur ECs (which I doubt they do...but it has been heard of) ur GC will know all about and can ta;k about how u're the only real help all that.

sure, since you do secretarial stuff, write secretary

same goes for school newspaper: if you edit articles, you are an editor

just remember to specifiy that exactly you do

Carnegie Institute of Technology (CIT)
College of Humanities and Social Sciences (H&SS)
Information Systems (IS)
Mellon College of Science (MCS)
School of Computer Science (SCS)
Tepper School of Business (TSB)
Bachelor of Humanities and Arts (BHA)
Which one of these sections at CMU is the easiest to get accepted into? (not including the Arts). Also which is the hardest?

hardest is the school of computer science. second hardest is whichever school has the electrical engineering program in it (i think CIT), then followed by tepper, i'd say. i am almost positive that the easiest program to get into is the school of social sciences. i think i have a pretty good sense of these things 'coz i went to their summer program and we had seminars on issues such as this. but feel free to say otherwise.

well, I wanted to apply to Mellon College of Science (MCS) what does anyone have to say about its rating on accpetance?

also, someone once sent me the acceptance rates for each school in CMU. Does anyone have it? And, if yes can you post the link on this thread? Thanks.

If officers are not showing up and other people are doing the job, then why not have another election? Then the people actually doing the work get credit, the flakes who wanted the title but aren't doing any work and are going to put it on their application will be booted....

I would be concerned that more than one person thinks they are secretary and only one of them was elected (not you.) I would speak to the advisor and ask if you can be designated the secretary. Do the counselors know who is who in the clubs incase a college does inquire? Doing a job is not the same as having the position, I can answer the phone at work, but that doesn't make me a receptionist.

Why would it matter? The designated secretary is a sophmore and I am a junior and its not like we'd be applying to the same school. And I'll ask my advisor if I can put secratary on my application and notify my GC. Would it be ok after all of that? Are colleges really check up on these things that closely?

SCS is by far the hardest to get into, then ECE (the afforementioned EE program), which is the only major in CIT you need to apply for (once into CIT itself you can choose the others) Also, HSS is the easiest to get into, with near a 50% acceptance rate.

You will be fine CMU243, more strength is given to your activities and leadership if a teacher, or GC also comments on it as if you are impacting your school someone will mention this. It just reinforces what you write and makes it stand out.You should give your GC and teachers a resume or list of activities/awards etc so they can write a great letter and do you justice.
