ECT test for Columbia GS

Hi everyone,

Just got my acceptence package.

I also got the ECT form. I don't know anything about the test.

Can you please post some information about it?

For those who took the test: is it in the same level of the TOEFL?

Thanks a lot

Hi, Adam,

Didn’t you took TOEFL already, I didn’t know they require you to take the ECT as well.

I have only taken the ECT not the TOEFL. It’s close to TOEFL though I consider it a little

bit easier than TOEFL. There are 10 levels, and you need to score level 10 to skip the

language class. If you didn’t score level 10 you won’'t be able to take all the classes at

columbia. so each level also three stages, for instance 9A,9B,9C . It depends on what

you got. they will tell you which level are you. and at the end you will have to be tested

to see if you can move on to the next level until you pass level 10.

There is no study materials, and no sample test. I would just say practice your writing,

you will be asked to handwrite your essay. and the rest will be on computer and timed.

reading, listen, vocabulary, sentence structure. you get the idea.

Hey, Thanks a lot for the answer,

I got took the TOEFL and got a 105. They told me that even if you take the the TOEFL you must do the ECT as well. But if you do the ECT you don’t need to do the TOEFL later.

So the reading part is just reading with questions? how much time do you have for it?

What level is the vocabulary?

In the listening part- do you listen to lectures and conversations?

What do you mean by sentence structure?- Like the Improving Sentences part on the SAT I?

Thanks

I just copied the email I got from the testing office

The test will consist of two sections: the first section is multiple choice questions online, and the second section is a written essay. You will have approximately 120 minutes to complete the first section by computer, and 90 minutes to complete the second section with paper and pen or pencil.

Listening part has everything, when I took it, it has conversation btw students, lectures, TV interviews, news report on automobile (I did not do well on the last one)

sentence structure, some of the questions will ask you to replace or fill in what’s best for the sentence. and grammar of course.
Good luck on the ECT Adam :)

If you scored more than 100, I think you will do well although I have no idea how they
grade the answers. no one knows, what you will know is what level you are, there are 10 levels, of course if you scored below a level 10 you will have to take the class with ALP.

just found this in my email, about the scores

These results are a total for both parts of the exam – multiple choice and essay. (There are no “separate” results for each section.) Results range from Level 1 (low) to Level 10 (high). Letters indicate subdivisions within Levels, ranging from A (low) to C (high). For example, Level 8 is higher than Level 6, and Level 7C is higher than Level 7A.

The ALP will not be able to tell you if you “passed” the ECT or not, as testing requirements vary for each program and/or department. Please consult your advisor, or the admissions office of the school you are applying to, in order to confirm if you have met their testing requirements.

Results are automatically forwarded to the Columbia office you indicated, if any, when you registered online for the test. If they are not received, please have the individual or office contact me directly for confirmation of your test results.
