ED chances for a student that has nothing special but decent grades (?)

Hello I’m a Chinese international student and am willing to apply for Johns Hopkins ED for 2019.

Currently my stats are :

GPA: 3.9+ (upward trend and 4.0s since sophomore 2nd sem)
ACT: 34
SAT II: math 2c (800) chemistry (780)

AP:
Microeconomics (5)
Macroeconomics (5)
Environmental science (5)
Psychology (5)
Chemistry (4)

Senior courseload:
AP Language and composition
AP Calculus BC
AP Biology
AP US Government

ECs:

  • Science research paper and internship at a top-tier university in China
  • Presented international patent (not a really novel idea in my opinion. it’s a public facility that aids both the pedestrians and the drivers)
    -Varsity basketball for 3 years
-Key club vice president for 3 years
    -Environmental club co-founder and president
-Amnesty international club co-founder and president
    -Drama club co-founder and president
    -Newspaper club member
-Student reporter at newpaper website (didn’t do much)
    -Medical service at local hospital
-Tutored english and math for students in low income family

I honestly don’t care major I would apply to, I just want to go to Johns Hopkins badly.
I lost confidence because all of the applicants have olympiads and national awards and stuff which I don’t have AT ALL.
Any input will be appreciated!

My kids were similar, 2 had 35 ACT, 1 had 33. Similar subject tests and number of APs. Similar grades and “normal” activities; one was National Merit finalist. All 3 got in so you definitely are a reasonable candidate. Good luck!

Since you’re an international student, the competition will be more serious but you certainly have a chance. It looks like you’re more of a science-y person, so if that’s what you really like keep going with that passion.
Let me just say that I got into JHU yesterday with a 4th place at a Science Olympiad state competition, and I’m from the 5th smallest state in the U.S. Sure national awards help, but true dedication and passion for something is what gets you in (I think).

If you look at the threads from yesterday, essays seem to really, really matter. Kids with top science awards especially need to show who they are as a person through their writing, which for Hopkins means the Common App and one mid-length supplement essay. I loved my Hopkins supplement, and I got in with an academic excellence scholarship. I hated my Chicago essays and got waitlisted. They count.
