just received an email.. joining your boat of deferrals.. lot of work awaits me..

oh man!! I AM IN!!! thank god!! IM GONNA GO TO AMHERST WOOOOO HOOO

admitted!!! got the email at 23:54

congrats to those who got in! i'm really glad for you, sabu and xiaolina.
well, as for me, essays to write and supplements to fill out.. lots of work! at least I have 9 more schools to apply to. jacktherapper and sid3sg.. yes, let's shake hands:)

Good news, xiaolina and sabu!

For jacktherapper and sid3sg and mysterious, SOOOO sorry!! But remember a deferral isn't a rejection. I think there were a few people on cc who were deferred last year but got in RD. Bummer though about having to do all the other applications. :(

I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for you all, that you either get into Amherst or things work out that you end up going to somewhere you'll like even better!

Hello fellow ED Amherst applicants!
Yesterday I also got a letter confirming my deferral:( I was so upset, and seriously cried for the rest of the night. How is everyone coping with it? What other schools will everyone be applying to?

On a lighter note, congrats to everyone who was accepted! I am envious, but happy for all of you--hopefully if the regular decision goes well I will join you guys as the class of 2012.

Does anyone know what the chances are of deferred applicants being accepted under regular decision??
-Ali

Well, I didn't cry because I was guessing that I'd be rejected, since Amherst is extremely selective, especially with internationals who are applying for finaid.. So a deferral wasn't a surprise for me, I'm guessing that's mainly because I need finaid. I prepared myself for it well in advance, of course I was upset just a little, but being prepared helped me cope with it:) Afterall, it's not easy for anyone to be rejected (well, okay I'm not rejected but I'm not admitted, so..), let alone not being accepted by your first choice college!
Still, it's much better than being rejected. At least we still have a chance.

that's true--at least we do have another opportunity for admissions to look at our application. Do you think the fact that they know Amherst is our number one choice (because we applied ED) will give us an edge in the regular decision round? Also, how many people were deferred? Is it like, 30 percent of ED applicants are accepted, 60 percent are deferred and only 10 are rejected? Anyone have any stats on this? Ahh I don't want to have to wait until April to hear back again!

I don't know the answer to your question, but my counselor told me that Amherst received massive amounts of early applications this year.. much more than the previous years.
I think they would acknowledge the fact that they're our first choice. I'm not sure if that would help us considerably, though.

does anyone wanna make a facebook group for hte class of 2012??? i was thinking about it

dastreets i totally agree, someone get it going

Amherst was overenrolled last year, and took no one off the deferred list. I understand that they were going to adjust the number of acceptances this year to avoid the same situation, so anyone's guess is good as to what will happen to deferrals. If it's like last year, there will be no movement. If they underestimate the number of acceptances that actually enroll, then they will move to the deferral list. As to who they will move, it depends on who they need to round out the class - pianist - physicist, etc. Good luck to all of you!

alright so the facebook group is made, feel free to join

So unhappy today =/.

Picked it as my number one choice, and for some reason, I mistakenly believed the thin envelope means an acceptance letter (I have it backwards). Took about 5 minutes for it to REALLY set in. Huge disappointment.

I had 800 verbal, 720 math, 760 writing. Great extra-curriculars (volunteered for Best Buddies, travelled abroad in student programs in China, India, Vietnam, Cambodia, Burma, Thailand, all years of highschool on the water polo team, vice president of chess team, played lead piano in school's jazz band 3 years, interned in a book store), best essay I've ever written regarding Chinua Achebe's quote about the order of reality, great college recs, and subject test scores of 790 in Literature, and 760 in U.S History, and then connections with both a big alumni and a board member.

People have been telling me for weeks (including my counselor) that I'm almost positively getting in. My GPA was on the borderline, but in the 4 AP classes I took this year, I got a C+ for my first quarter grade in Biology. I've never had a C+ for the year, almost all A's usually, so that is what I think caused it.

I hate how selective the admissions process is.

ejr1, I think you're thinking of the waitlist. It is true that Amherst didn't go to its waitlist last year. But they did take some of the people who were deferred last year in the regular decision round. It is a small number though-I'm not going to reference stats in case they're out of date.

I know you guys must be hearing this a lot, but it's true: there are so many great schools out there! College will be terrific wherever you go.

I too got deferred; it stinks, but hey that's life right? I really wish Amherst gave interviews. I think that they tell a lot more about a personality with an interview than a supplemental essay can.

Well . . . time to continue working on my other apps! I really hope I get in spring.

And millerw16, you sound like a stellar candidate - don't let this deferral get you down.

a good read - The Amherst Student

Echoing rchp here... Applicants who were deferred last year WERE admitted in the regular round, reflecting not only the extraordinarily strong pool of ED candidates Amherst attracts but the college's policy of taking no more than 30 percent of the incoming class early in order to assure regular round applicants a fair shot, many more of whom need to be able to compare financial aid offers. (As you know, other colleges use upwards of 40 or even 50 percent of the available slots for ED applicants.) I can't imagine the admissions office doesn't once again have its eye on outstanding students they know they want at Amherst but had to defer.

Like rhcp, I can't cite statistics of how many deferred students were accepted, either--maybe that information is available somewhere online--but I want to emphasize that you just never know and to urge anyone who is disappointed now of course to energetically pursue your other tremendous opportunities but also not to lose hope. You just never know.

Oops! You're right, They did take a few, it was the waitlist that didn't move. Sorry! Don't lose heart.

sid, you know that article is a year old, right?
