Why are you interested in Carleton College and how did this interest develop?

Tell them what you just told us! Let them know that were it not for concern about FA you would have committed ED. Be sincere, demonstrate how much you know about the school, and tell them why you belong there. Sincerity and honesty may seem out of vogue these days. But I would not underestimate their impact on a Carleton ad com.

Good luck!

Okay, thanks! I'm actually having trouble narrowing down my "why carleton?" essay... there's just so much to love about the school.

In the "Why Carleton?" essay, my daughter wrote about what she saw students doing on the day she visited (very Carleton-specific) and how those activities fit her.

Does anyone know if there are parent activities during Accepted Student Weekend or are we (parents) supposed to go to the Cities and amuse ourselves while the kids are in Northfield? I'm already working on schedules and calendars and such. Thanks!

Rebeccake, they will have activities, dinners, etc. for parents. There will be time to meet with financial aid people, as well. From my experience last year going to many admit student days, it is well worth the time for the parents to spend time on campus. My D is a freshman at Carleton this year, couldn't be happier with her choice.

Thank you so much Mom90. I was hoping there were activities for us, but wasn't sure. We are planning on attending one one of the weekends as we are only a five hour drive away (in Wisconsin).
Glad to hear your daughter is happy there. The more I read about Carleton, and the more I hear from Carleton parents makes me pretty sure my daughter will be happy there too (she is already sure she will be happy there!).

Anyone know if students accepted ED attend accepted students weekend, or is it generally for those who got in RD and are deciding whether to commit?

I hope it is for ED students too -- just to keep the excitement level up if for no other reason!

My Kentucky born and raised daughter is a sophomore at Carleton this year. It's the school of her dreams--and then some. She couldn't be happier with the quality of her education, experiences, and friendships made ... and her parents couldn't be either. Have fun on accepted student weekend! :)

Hey, slightly off topic, but does anyone know where the link to the financial aid breakdown page is? I can't find it...

(It was like, a sample of two different students and how their financial aid would be broken down--grants/loans/etc.)

Most of the people who visit during Accepted Students' Weekend are strongly considering Carleton but are waffling between Carleton and somewhere else. There definitely are some ED admits or RD admits who already sent in their deposits so while it's not weird to visit as an ED admit, but you will hear a lot of conversations comparing Carleton to Grinnell, Macalester, Swarthmore, Middlebury, etc. The majority of admits who go to one of the weekends are pumped about Carleton. You won't run into very many people who are just there to say they visited after already making a decision to go somewhere else.

If I remember correctly, the admissions office runs tours and info sessions for parents. Many campus offices also host open houses so that parents can drop by and ask questions. You can also kill an hour or two wandering around downtown Northfield and looking in the cutesy little shops.

Hey I live in MN not to far from Northfield and am looking to take a tour... Would I still get the full affect going next week or should I wait until classes are back in session and the students are on campus?

If possible, wait until students are on campus - they are a large part of what makes Carleton unique.
