Hi I could really use some advice. I know Colgate is the school I want to go to. My stats put me at almost exactly the 50% percentile of admitted students- meaning half the acceptances were better than me, half were worse.

Basically.. I have a good shot at getting in, but not at all final.

The only thing holding me back is financial aid- what if its not good enough, do i give up colgate since its binding or risk not getting into my dream school? I am an excellent candidate for financial aid but I have paranoia issues so i really need the advice of others =)

I would say that you should apply, unless you expect some sort of merit scholarships from elsewhere. If your alternatives give only need-based aid, then you can be sure that you’ll get quite a good package OR you can get a good package after appealing OR you can “unbind” yourself from the agreement by saying that with the given package, Colgate is not affordable to you.

You cannot be “stuck” as far as I understand.

If the offer is not enough, you should probably appeal, being prepared to supply more information, but if it’s still not enough, you can decline without consequence.

Talk with your parents (if they are paying). The rule on these forum has been this, if you can’t afford to risk a financial risk that the package might not meet your needs, then don’t apply ED.

^ I heartily disagree; applying ED is not just for the wealthy.

If Colgate is your dream school, go ahead and apply ED; there is no risk, you have nothing to lose, and everything to gain. If you want to compare FA packages, or Colgate is not your dream school, don’t apply ED.

I still don’t get it; if the dream school Colgate’s offer is insufficient, it is declined, and the search begins for an RD school as if ED never happened. Where’s the risk?

vossron I agree with your point…
I applied ED I and needed SIGNIFICANT financial aid. Fortunately, Colgate was extremely generous and I received over $40,000 in grant money plus loans and a work program. Had I not received enough aid to attend, there would have been no issue getting out of the ED agreement. Therefore, If Colgate is your first choice, apply ED II and don’t worry about the financial aid!!

You may apply to other RD schools if you should choose ED II with Colgate. You will only need to commit after you have received your financial package. But you will not be able to compare Colgate’s package with other RD schools’ FA packages. I would go for it, then make a decision once you know Colgate’s response in Feb.
