ED interview international applicants

I just got a Email from a Columbia alumi..I will have an interview,,either on phone or meeting in person..What do you guys think? which method is better?
Is Columbia interview selective or random?? Some people say Columbia interview some possible international applicants while other say they interview randomly..I see other Chinese ED applicants that have not interviewed....

What do you think??

thanks alot!

I think that in person it's better because it's more personal...but that's just my opinion. But make sure you have the interview as soon as possible, because I've heard the bulk of decisions for ED are made either this week or have been already made (that's what my counselor told me).

the interviewer says we can talk on the phone.....I just wonder which is better.

Do it in person. More intimate, allows the interviewer to know you better, and easier to correct any "oops".

yes..I will try to meet him in person rather than talking on the phone.

Is Columia interview selective?

I'm also an international student, and I have already been interviewed. The interviews aren't selective -- as long as you have submitted part 1 of your app and there are Columbia alumni living in your area, you will most likely get an interview. All of the students who are applying ED at my international school have all been interviewed.

I have to say, there is no alumi in my area..I am Chinese..The interview is in Beijing and I am in Shenyang....It is more than 800 kilometers between the two city..I have some school mates apply Columia but have not been interviewed....

I think it is strange..Columbia only interview applicants if there is alumi in that area....why does it interview me? I can not stop dreamming....although my dream is naive and childish

violaina: 你会说中文吗?我会说一点儿中文。我是美国人。
Anyway, back to english... don't worry about the interview. Alumni interviews do not matter that much in the admissions process(on-campus interviews are another story, but those are not available to most people). Alumni interviews are generally meant for you to get more information about Columbia, not for Columbia to evaluate you in another respect. The only way it'll count against you is if you're offered one and screw it up badly(i.e. REALLY badly, showing that there's no way you could be a competent student). It seems you can't get to the interview, and I don't think the adcoms expect you to travel between 沈阳 and 北京。

That said, if you're able to do a phone interview, definitely take the opportunity. If nothing else, you'll get another insight into Columbia life.

mikesown:我当然会说中文,,我是中国人..你的中文很不错啊
I will have a phone interview tonight..I think it is a good experience.I am preparing and tring to be better..

BTW..it is kinda late to interview ED applicants, isn't it?

violania:
Good luck with the interview!

Also, like I said before, alumni interviews do not weigh heavily on your admissions decision. I highly doubt that once Columbia receives the interview form they'll say "violaina had a horrible interview! We must reject[him/her?]!" In fact, my guess would be Columbia wouldn't see the interview form before their decision is made(for ED that is). Just focus on asking questions about things you want to know about Columbia.

mikesown

thank you very much..what you say really help me alot..

I also wish you good luck and go to the college you like
