Did not take SAT I
SAT IIs - Spanish: 630, English: 670
GPA w (don’t know uw): 3.77

I’ve been taking honors courses since freshman year and I’ve taken (including current courses) 8 AP courses over the years. [AP Biology, AP World History, AP English Language, AP English Literature, AP Spanish Language, AP Calculus AB, AP Physics B, AP Government]

I also got a 4 on both the AP English Lang. and AP Spanish Lang. test last year.

I applied to the Multicultural Scholarship Preview Days program and got accepted. They paid for me to come visit the school, where I had an amazing interview and one-on-one time with the admission staff.

I think I had a good Common App essay (it was about one day of exploration/losing myself in Toledo). And my Why Reed essay… as Reed is my dream school, it rolled onto the paper like butter.

My ECs are:

Four years in a digital media art program (every week, seven hours)

Involved in a club for three years (VP this year)

Been involved with horses for years and I’ve trained my own

And then I’ve won a lot of awards at my school for student citizenship and for good grades and stuff.

I’m thinking that it had to be my essays… Except for the challenging coursework, I’m not super impressive on paper.

My SAT scores just came in. I got exactly the same score as before: a 1780! My CR went up from a 600 to 660. My M went down from a 520 to a 510. My W went down from a 660 to a 610. I hope my ACT scores are better, or else I may be staring at a rejection letter in March.

SAT scores are the absolute last thing the Reed admissions staff cares about in the application process. I was accepted ED I even though my SAT scores arrived a month late (by no fault of my own; I had to send them five times for them to finally arrive).

^^ Some schools use super scoring, and build a composite SAT based on the best section scores, regardless of date. If Reed does, then your superscore is 1840–a bit closer to your goal of 2000.

Private school deadlines are often soft; if a school believes it wants an applicant, they’ll wait for whatever application item is late, until it’s just too late in the process. Numeric stats are just as important to Reed as are the other four parts of the app (curriculum, essays, recs, ECs).

I just got back my ACT scores. Overall: 28. English: 29. Math: 24. Reading: 32. Science: 27. Writing: 25. The ACT was MUCH easier than the SAT. It was just the time that was evil. Should I be celebrating or worrying?

It’s not a matter of being easier. The ACT tests more subject knowledge. It’s the reason a few colleges and universities will accept the ACT with the writing component as a substitute for the SAT IIs (subject tests). But most will simply accept the ACT with writing component as a total substitute for the SAT. The SAT tests, among other things, your ability to figure out the tricks on the test. It’s more of an aptitude test than a subject matter test. That’s why some schools require, in addition to SAT 1s, SAT IIs, which are subject matter tests.

Some people actually score lower on the ACT than the SAT. You did slightly better on the ACT. Your 28 converts to an 1860 on the SAT. That’s what, an 80 point difference from your actual SAT score? That’s not much easier, it’s slightly easier—for you. Nevertheless, it is better, so I’d advise you to go with it.

But, your stats aren’t the most important thing. Worry less about your numbers and more about your attitude: you have to love learning and furthermore learning at Reed in order to get in.

Did not take ACT
SAT - CR: 750, Math: 720, Writing: 800
GPA - 4.1 weighted… LOL? basically did nothing up to last semester of sophomore year, also very little grade inflation at my high school so my class rank wasn’t so bad.

4 APs, the rest Honors.

My “Why Reed” essay was really strong, seems to be a theme around here. My common app essay was also good although I found a typo…
My ECs are:

Four years as a Creative Writing major at an art school —> 100 page published senior thesis, numerous Scholastic Art and Writing national awards

Editor of school newspaper

Tutoring

Student government without leadership position

some others

My letters were probably really great, but everyone has that.

Also, from South Carolina. I’m sure that helped.
