Anyone else applying ED? I or II? Stats?
Why do you love Reed?

probably EDI here! stats are pretty much average, I’m hoping to write a killer essay and get top notch recs!
I love Reed because of (cliche but) everything, from the honor code, to the no grades system, to HUM110 (have never taken any Western civilization/history as I am from international curriculum), also the nuclear reactor and of course Renn Fayre! I have only visited the campus once, hopefully going to visit again soon (perhaps in the winter)

@kyprosp We’re pretty similar! What are your stats? I have a less-than-stellar GPA (3.2) but good test scores (31 ACT with a 36 Eng score, retaking it next month and also taking the SAT).

Right now I’m trying to figure out what to write my essays about for the ROME program…I’ve been putting it off because of writers block.

@codexsplanade Our school doesn’t have GPA so I’m not sure, and we run on IB, I got at least 36/42 every year. I got a 32 on ACT (My math and science were 36 and 35, english not so great) and I’m taking some SAT II in November.

I can’t go to ROME because of the SATII, so I’m instead going to Discover Reed! Super excited
I have writer’s block for the Common App and Why Reed? essay, and the ED deadline is looming

@kyprosp Nice job on the ACT, though. I’m the opposite. Reading (33) and Eng (36) were good, Math was very meh (25).
I thought ROME was for US applicants so that would be the reason you could not apply? I don’t think the SAT has anything to do with it, unless I’m mistaken.
Have fun at Discover Reed, btw! I’f love to go but it’s too expensive.

Writers block is a pain…I have it for all of the essays. Done almost all my applications except for the essays. I’m such a perfectionist with my writing that I’ve put it off to make it as good as possible.

@codexsplanade Thank you! I don’t know if it’d look good on my apps, I also got 800 on MathIIC.
I am a US citizen but I mean that the dates overlap! Nov 8 - SATII and I believe ROME is on the same weekend.
I’m super excited, I’ll be sure to tell you how it is

I totally know what you mean. Same with me! And my internal deadline for apps are next monday. I like to say that I’m a lazy perfectionist which is hell for apps.

@kyprosp Oops, sorry, misinterpreted something you said before. What subject test(s) are you taking?
I’ve just now decided what I’m probably going to write about for my ROME application…ah, well. Writing for colleges is so intimidating because it feels like every sentence you put down will be picked apart.

Just so you guys know, grades do exist at Reed. The way I see it, there is lack of grade inflation first, and a deemphasis on grades second. I am very well aware that the real world exists so I, for one, plan on keeping track of my grades, regardless of the culture here.

Hello all, Leilani here, will be applying EDI and have already sent in my ROME application. Hate to post one of these, but, chance me? I’ve got a 3.5 GPA, but my SAT scores are less than perfect. I’ve been looking in to retaking the standardized tests, but I have a chronic illness and I’ve been in surgery on each testing date. My essay is, in my opinion, excellent and I’m still working on the supplement but so far I like where it’s going. I know my teachers will write some good recommendations but I really feel like my catch is my involvement. I’ve got 1,002 hours of community service thus far (I love volunteering) as well as research experience and extracurricular involvement (Young Democrats, a couple service clubs, sports, and general involvement around town).

I feel in love with Reed because of… everything. Their students learn for the sake of learning and I would love to immerse myself in that environment. There’s an emphasis on bridging the unnecessary gap between science and art. I love Reed for it’s rigorous courses, it’s liberal atmosphere, it’s “do something” drive, and it’s commitment to education. I dream of being a Reedie! I hope to see all of you on campus next year! I’ve got my fingers crossed.

@codexsplanade Do you know when we’ll get notification of acceptance for ROME? I finished my supplements a couple days ago and I’m already antsy about notification! What did you end up writing for “The first time I ever…”? I had major writer’s block for weeks!

@lganser I just finished mine last week and am having a friend of my dad’s, a respected editor and writer, edit and critique it. Still haven’t written the “why ROME” essay (oops…) but I wrote the creative essay about a time I failed. How about you?
Good luck getting in, btw! I think you have a good shot. Hopefully all of us will be Reed-bound in December.

@codexsplanade Oh that’s a good idea for the creative essay. I’m a Native Hawaiian so I wrote about the first time I was allowed to participate in one of our traditions. Still working on the Why Reed supplement for Common App.
And thank you! I really hope we’re all Reed bound soon! We could all study together for Hum 110!

Turned in my ROME app! Really though, does anyone know when the notifications go out? Must be relatively soon, since the program is in early Nov.

John Perkins, the program director, told me they would start reviewing the applications immediately after the deadline and notify by mid-October.

Visited earlier this summer, planning on interviewing this month
My Why Reed? essay is definitely solid, probably 8.5-9/10
Still haven’t finished my Common App essay
Teacher recs should be awesome, I had the same teachers for two years bc they changed what classes they taught

Most likely applying ED1.

Hey guys what did you write about? I “why ROME” about how reed embodies the ideals of a classical republican society ecxept to enhance an active learning community and diversity enhances this community. for creative essay though i wrote about the time i went up to a telescope on a hill and saw almost all of Northern California and i said how the land blended with the stars and made me appreciate for the first time the earth and my home.

@analogcadaver You’re a very solid applicant, I can’t image them saying no good luck!

@ZH1064 I wasn’t very creative on my Why Rome? essay, just talked about why I want to visit the campus and all that. In my Creative Essay, I wrote about the spelling bee I was in in the 4th grade and how it was the first time I ever opened myself up for, and accepted, my own failure.

Did everybody get that email ROME sent out last night?

@Iganser You gave me a heart attack for a second. Does anybody know what end of the week means? This weekend? Next weekend? Friday? I’m hyperventilating. How many applicants do you think they received?

I’m thinking by the weekend we should know. I’m nervous. Like, really nervous. I can’t stop checking my email. I was wondering if you had any guess as to how many applicants they received. I am not guessing all that many but I have a feeling I am probably wrong. They said we wouldn’t be hearing anything from them until about the 15th but then they sent that email out so I’m hyperventilating like crazy.
