Your chances decrease because you competing for one of about 80 spots (total for both ED and RD!) instead of the number of spots for the actual college, which is of course much higher. PLME is very selective and they can only have a very small number, it is a constant number due to lab sizes etc.

In 06/07, 55 of 1651 were accepted according to some book I have. =/
But they've they expanded the program size a little so I think it's now 80?

lol, i still don't follow your arguement ri. those who don't check the box might be deferred/rejected by plme. but then let's say they're accepted to brown, then they'll have to attend, so brown won't lose anything, as they'll still attend. those that do check the box might not attend brown even if they get in RD, so brown would lose that applicant.
but i really don't think it affects our chances...

"In 2006-07, there were 1974 applicants to the PLME. Of that number, 79 were offered admission to the PLME and an additional 157 were offered admission to other Brown degree programs. In fall 2007, 50 matriculated in the PLME and 75 matriculated in other Brown degree programs."

^ i guess we mite getting to much into conspiracy theory haha

but prolly more NJ plme ppl than other states (we are that good)
also i think that so many more ppl from NJ are gonna apply RD that theyre waiting to throw us up against all the other kids from NJ

hey guys, i have a question.
so, obviously since the common app and supplements for ED have been sent, they can't be changed.

but if i want to apply again for RD and change a few things, should i make a duplicate version of everything and resend them? And for ED, i declined to be bound to brown if i wasn't accepted into PLME. Am i allowed to change that?

Sorry to hi-jack your thread but I have some quick questions to ask you!

1)Can we write two separate essays to fulfill the PLME prompts? Everything in that box refers to an "essay" (singular form) and there's also only one upload tab (granted, you could paste one essay after the other, but I was just wondering).

2) Are they strict on the 500 word limit? It's mentioned nowhere afterall. I'm having trouble cutting down from 600 words

Finally:

3)How in depth did you describe your volunteering etc. experiences? I'm having some trouble fitting everything in and clumped all my work experience into a paragraph (i concentrated more on what first got me interested in medicine than how each specific volunteering experience changed me...no space!). Bad idea?

(1) ^ Yes -- I wrote a separate essay for each question and placed both into one document to upload.

(2) Probably not, but try keeping it at around 550-ish

(3) You can talk about your volunteering experience in your additional info, but having more than a paragraph for each probably isn't necessary. For my own volunteering experience I only described what I did in a list.

I knew I wanted to apply to PLME ED but I was so stressed about whether or not to apply ED to just Brown by itself. I had heard, like a couple of people on this thread, that if you took the non-binding Brown option, it would hurt your chances at acceptance -- this seems to be an awfully persistent rumor.

I chose to apply Early Decision to PLME with the non-binding option to Brown. I knew that I wouldn't go to Brown if I wasn't accepted to PLME (too high of a tuition cost to be worth it for just four years). I wasn't going to let a rumor stab my parents' wallet to death!

And to wrap it all up, I was accepted to Brown and PLME both...so that's where I'm going come fall 2009.

Obviously, applying to PLME ED and Brown non-binding did not mean that I couldn't get accepted to PLME. Please don't listen to this rumor! Apply the way your heart feels you should.

Hopefully that takes care of this rumor once and for all.

Ideally you want to talk about how all your experiences (i.e. internships, volunteering, shadowing, etc.) have affected you personally and influenced your decision to pursue medicine rather than listing them off and what you have done. It would seem that concentrating on one activity or even a specific part of that activity, like volunteering would be more beneficial and more meaningful.
-I'm an RD PLME applicant by the way haha
