Education majors?

Anyone have knowledge of UA’s Education program?

My D (currently high school sophomore) is interested in secondary math education. In looking at UA’s math ed degree it is completely housed within the school of education…some schools have a joint program between math and ed schools.

How soon are students exposed to classroom??

Also, she would love to minor in theatre as she has been involved in plays since she was 10.

Can ed majors even have a minor??

Any info would be greatly appreciated!!

Personally, I don’t know a lot about the College of Education because I don’t have a child in the dept, but I can tell you this…

When I was at Parents Weekend, I met an education major and her family. They are from out of state. They told me that they visited many universities and they chose Alabama because of its College of Education.

This is from the Dean of the C of Ed…

*We have enjoyed unprecedented growth over the last five years. In fact, our enrollment has more than doubled. This growth has not come at the expense of quality. We have the best students we have ever had and our graduates continue to win many honors.

Our College received the highest possible rating (4.00 “A” and 100% pass rate on basic skills tests) on the latest Alabama State Department of Education Institutional Report Card for the State’s 16 public and 13 private colleges and universities educating teachers for the third time in a row. That means we have received the “A” rating every time the State has issued its institutional report card. In addition, our graduates continue to be named to various teachers of the year honors and to be selected for school, system, and state leadership positions.*

I did learn this last year…although all other majors use the one "university scholarship form, the College of Education has an additional form to fill out. So, be sure to fill that one out as well. [College of Education :: College of Education Scholarships](Scholarships – The University of Alabama College of Education | The University of Alabama)

It can be confusing because the “university scholarship application” [Undergraduate Scholarships - The University of Alabama](http://scholarships.ua.edu/) implies that that is the only one for freshmen…they seem to have overlooked that Education has another form.

So…do both forms… :)

As for education majors having a minor… It is allowed.

It probably depends on how a student chooses her classes, and whether she comes into college with any AP credits or dual enrollment credits.

Requirements for the minor in theatre. The theatre minor requires 21 hours of coursework with the TH designation, including TH 290 (4 hours) and 6 hours at the 300 or 400 level. A minimum of 6 hours at the 300 or 400 level must be earned on this campus.

Another alternative to minoring in theatre for those who just want some fun acting experience.

The College of Engineering (yes, Engineering) has a theatre group that allows all majors to participate. They do one play a semester…usually they are musical comedies. They sing, dance, etc. The CoE supports this effort because the participation builds confidence and speaking/presentation abilities. The group is call COE does ART

Here’s a story about one of their plays…
[University of Alabama News ‘COE Does ART’ Presents ‘The Bachelor King’](http://uanews.ua.edu/2009/11/coe-does-art-presents-the-bachelor-king/)

As you can see from the cast listing on the bottom, they have students from other majors as well. That is totally fine with them.
