I'm a newly admitted EECS students, pretty set on pursuing the computer science option.

My problem is that I'm probably not going to be able to attend CalSo, so I would appreciate it if anyone could help me pick courses for this fall semester.

My AP test scores are:
Japanese: 5
World History: 5
US History: 4
English Literature: 4
Physics B: 5
Statistics: 5

The tests I've taken this year are:
English Language: 4 or 5
US Government: 4 or 5
Calculus AB: 5 (I'm pretty confident in this one)

I went through this year's calculus class without any problems, but I'm not sure if I should start at Math 1A or 1B. Would there be complications for me in the future if I choose to start at 1A?

Other than the math classes though, I'm basically at a complete loss for what I should take. Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Hi KDawgAtsu!

I am also an incoming EECS major at Cal! Go Bears!!! :D

I went to CalSo last week, and from what I learned, enrolling in Math 1A will not cause any complications in the upcoming years.

I also got a 5 on the Physics B test and felt that Calculus AB wasn’t a problem for me. I’m still waiting for my score, but math has always been my strength in school. I will be taking Math 1A and I also suggest that you take it too, since it is a lot better to be safe than sorry. I have been told many times to take “easier” classes my first semester, since I have to get used to the different environment of college learning.

If you want to see if Math 1B is appropriate for you though, check out this link to view samples of the math1a and math1b final exams:
[Choosing an Appropriate First Math Course — UC Berkeley College of Engineering](http://coe.berkeley.edu/students/current-undergraduates/new-students/choosing-an-appropriate-first-math-course.html)

As for other classes, it is recommended that you take cs61a and a science elective such as chem1a.

It is also recommended that you take a humanities course such as psychology2 or english1a.

If you’re looking for a fifth class, you can look into freshman seminars such as ee25. They are only 1 unit classes with a pass/no pass grading system so they aren’t as rigorous.

CalSo counselors recommended ~15 credits for “normal progress” and taking 4 classes should be around 16 units so that should be good.

Some extra info from CalSo: you can drop a class within the first 5 weeks, and ninjacourses.com is excellent for planning your schedule.

The EECS section of the Undergraduate Engineering handout contains a sample schedule, and it is very accurate as to how the counselors encourage us to plan our schedules.

Hope all my blabbering served some help haha. =/
