Schedule questions

So I am a freshman EECS major and I have a few questions about classes.

First should I take CS61A, CS61B, or whatever is after that?
I took the Computer Science A AP test and scores 5, but my school does not offer an AB course, so I took a class over the summer. This is list of topics for the class 15-111 Home Page
I have heard some people say it is better to do the lower level cs classes again to get adjusted to the difficulty, but I am not sure.

I am also wondering which math class to take. I took AP Calc BS this year and I am pretty sure I got a 5, so which one should I pick? I also want to know if anyone has any recommendations for humanities classes to satisfy the reading and composition requirement. My final question is about the Science Elective mentioned in the Engineering Undergraduate Handbook under sample curricula for EECS. If I already have credit for Biology, Chemistry, and most likely physics, what should I take?

math: skip out of 1A-1B assuming you indeed get the 5. You really don’t learn anything new, except for ODE’s in 1B (which will be reviewed in your engineering classes anyway, as well as in 54)

physics: you’ll need to take 7B, so maybe think about that for this semester? The first 5 weeks of 7B are pretty straightforward, and most of the last 10 weeks are covered in AP Phys C (although in 7B you learn somewhat more about AC circuits)

I haven’t taken any CS, so I can’t really help you there. but yeah, the general consensus is that taking java again is helpful, AP score or not. I think you can use your chem/bio ap scores to satisfy the science elective…

Thank you very much Cupola. Do you have any thoughts on the Reading and Composition Requirement classes?

Do you know yet if you want to go EE or CS? Have you looked at assist.org to see if you the course you took transfers to Berkeley? If not, then start going through the whole 61 series with 61A.

As far as R&C is concerned, German R5A is easy (I hear German R5B is also easy). I did South Asian R5B over the summer, and besides the pacing (normal for a summer course), found it easy.

Azure326:
Yeah I definitely want to go CS and I am almost 100% certain I want to do Option IV: “For students interested in design and analysis of algorithms, complexity
theory and other theoretical topics, artificial intelligence, or computer graphics.”

I definitely have credit for 61A from a 5 on the AP Computer Science A test.
And that website assist.org only deals with public schools and I took the class at a private institution(Carnegie Mellon University). Even so would you recommend retaking 61b because that would make this easier than trying to see if I will get credit.

Yeah I heard German R5A is pretty much the way to go.

Finally, how does this look for a schedule? It’s not too hard is it?
CS 61b
Math 53
German R5A
Physics 7B

Oops I assumed that since 61B is pretty much what is covered on the AP Computer Science AB exam that 61A would be like AP Computer Science A, but it is completely different material so you don’t get course credit. Okay so then I can deal with whether or not I will credit for 61B later, since I should do 61A right now anyway.

Then scratch that last question, this schedule is fine right?
CS 61A
Math 53
German R5A
Physics 7B

Theoretically, that schedule is fine. Unfortunately… because many others know that the German R&C courses are easy, they got filled up really quickly. You can try waitlisting.

For Physics 7B… uh… bad news…

This is what’s said on the Physics department website. Hate to be the bearer of bad news…

Of course, you could always have already signed up for those classes at CalSO, except all of this happened before CalSO began.

Uh wow that’s pretty bad. Then what should I take in place of Physics 7B?
Also if all the German RC courses are full, what would be the next best option?

I’m not sure about RC courses, but you can also take the opportunity to take an AC course (and the best part? you can take it pass/no pass, so you don’t have to stress that you theoretically might get a B instead of an A :P).

Also, if you’re an EECS major, how about the engineering class E 10 or E 7 (whichever one should be taken first…)?

Oh then I guess I can just do my RC courses later and do an AC now. Do you know anything about American Studies 101AC with Michael Cohen because he gave a welcome address during the overnight host program and he seemed cool and the class seems interesting?
And do you recommend taking it P/NP? Doesn’t that look bad for grad school or no?

And yeah I’m an EECS major. We have to take EE 20N and EE 40, so I guess I could do EE 20N fall semester and then try and get into Physics 7B later. If the only prereq for EE 20N is Math1B which I have credit for, then I’ll be fine even if I haven’t done EE before right?

So then is this schedule fine also
Math 53
CS61A
American Studies 101AC or another RC course
EE 20N
