EFC

I surprisingly got denied from UF. I have basically free rides at UCF and FGCU honors. I just really feel like i fit a lot more at UM and so do my parents.

Just not factoring food in bc its not an added cost just for going to UM. Computer is included in COA. I live an hour from UM.

Then ask your parents if they’ll pay $25k-30k per year.

Basically, the only thing worth factoring in is Tuition + Housing. = 47,000

20k from parents + 5k from FL + 2k prepaid + 16k scholarship would = 43k. job would get around to the 47k. The thing is, getting that 16k scholarship ATLEAST

“Basically, the only thing worth factoring in is Tuition + Housing. = 47,000”

What about FOOD? What about Books? What about university fees and course fees?

“i basically have a free ride to FGCU Honors and to UCF, but i feel like i need UM”

That’s a lot of money. Only you can decide if you want to graduate with about $100k in debt, $25k per year, because that is what it’s going to take. Even getting half paid by UM and other grants is going to be tough without some kind of extra scholarship like athletic or public service. Just use the required costs of tuition and room/board, assuming you’ll pay for other things as they come up:

Tuition & R/B = $55k
Less:
Bright Futures $3k
FRAG $2.5k

Prepaid $2

$47.5

Parents $20K
Merit $16

$11.5

This is best case scenario, with parents putting in their max of $20 and not accounting for anything but tuition, room and board, so you’ll still need books and transportation, spending money, etc. You said you don’t want loans but how else will you do it?

Tuition
$41,580

Fees
$1,272

Housing & Meals
$12,314 <<< Why do you think that you don't have to count food?

Books

$910

*The above comes to about $56k (at THIS YEAR's RATE....next year will be
higher) *

Personal
$2,060 <<<< This is what your job will cover.

Transportation (this may be high, but there will be costs going back and forth unless you live really close to UM)
$1,270

No, you’re off by at around $10k…plus personal, etc.

I mean maybe I can have the $5500/yr loan at 3.86% that would only end up costing like 25k for four years. I have money for personal, job will get me like 3k, and i live an hour from Miami so transportation shouldnt even be factored in at all

yeah twoanddone, that extra 11k is a problem. But with 3k job, and maybe getting a 5500/yr loan, that will almost cover it

Would getting a job on campus be simple to get?

You still need to cover at least $56k (which will be higher next year and each year after that).

What is FRAG?

2,150 for being a fl resident

i’ve heard of someone getting 50% tuition, and then they gave her 75%, and then 100%. Do you think they would raise my scholarship if i cant afford UM?

Ok…well ask your parents what is the MAX they’ll contribute.

The upper quartile at UM has a 1430+ M+CR. That quartile is where the better merit is going to be awarded. The deeper the student is penetrated in that quartile, the higher the merit.

You just need to decide if it is worth it (if you get enough in merit aid from UM or this is all moot). I think your parents are being very generous to pay $80k over what they’ve already paid and planned for. I personally don’t get the attraction to UCF but clearly 50,000 students do, and many from my kids’ high school chose it over UF and FSU. I know my kids would pick a Florida public with little debt over UM with the extra cost to me plus loans to them. Even getting the Stafford loans adds up to $27000 over 4 years and approximately $300/mo payment for 10 years. TEN. That’s like paying for 2 cars, yet not having the cars to drive.

Another option is to start trying for all the little scholarships ($500-1000) you can. Some are only good for a year but there will be others you can apply for once you are in school. It is a LOT of work, and sometimes you don’t get the scholarship. My daughter just applied for one that took her a lot of time and she wasn’t selected, so now she has to come up with another plan.

Honestly, if you were my child I’d say to try for UM, see how much merit aid you can get, fill out a few scholarship apps, and then make a decision when you have all the number. But if you were my child, I wouldn’t be paying the $20k/yr if you have other options. That is really a lot of money when you have other options.

Ok, i see. It was just that I was really stuck on going to UF and i was surprisingly rejected, so now I am stuck on UM. I cant really find scholarships where i have a chance to get it.

Whats your intended major? Unless it is STEM, UM isn’t going to be worth the money, and even then UCF is a good option.

FRAG is Florida Resident Assistance Grant. It is 40% of instate tuition if a florida resident goes to a private school in Florida. It has to be re-approved every year by the legislature, and last year it was $2500, but the funding fell $33 short for spring semester. It’s a nice bonus. Many students also get Bright Futures, $2300-3100 a year.,

OP, have you run the net price calculator for UM? They are pretty accurate, especially for the school provided aid, so it if says you’ll get $16000, you’ll probably get close.

My intended major in finance/accounting. I did the net price calculator, but i dont think it gives an accurate merit scholarship amount, so it screws things up
