Effect of My Midyear Grades

So, yesterday, I found out that I got deferred at UPenn.

I have a 3.84 GPA and a 2080 SAT. I honestly didn't expect to get in at all when I applied, as it's an Ivy, but now I find that they're going to be looking at my Midyear report.

First semester grades
A - AP French
** - AP Statistics and AP English
Cs - AP European History and AP Bio

How badly is this going to damage me if I stay on a generally similar average for the next quarter? Perhaps I've already shot my chance at UPenn, but as for other schools, how important are midyear grades as compared to grades from previous years? (I got one B my freshman year and two my junior year - in Pre-Calc and Honors Physics, everything else was As.) Please help, as I'm panicking and I would like some good news.

I am sorry you got disappointing news, but I’m also afraid this is a problem. Not only are your mid-year grades the most recent snapshot of you as a student that colleges are going to get, but they are also your grades in the classes that most closely approximate college-level work.

When does your semester end, and what can you do between now and then to improve the situation?
