EFTP-Worth it?!?

Hey all, I've searched already for this but the threads are very old.

DS has been accepted to Summer B for engineering and when we did our tour way back when it was recommended that all freshman engineering students do the Engineering Freshman Transition Program the first semester of college to get up to speed.

Now we are wondering if it's worth basically giving up a semester to do this program. He's already in an intense IB program with AP/IB Physics and AP/IB Chem (as well as all the other IB classes) so it's not like he's slacking and taking easy classes. He would like to do the ME/AE double major which will already require an extra 9 credit hours to complete. When he graduates high school, he should have a ton of AP/IB credit so won't need the 6 hours general ed credits the program would give him.

So we would like to hear from current students about whether it's a worthwhile program or if he should just jump straight into his major track. We can see the benefits to both but of course the school recommends that he do the program.
