STEPUP?

Hi guys, yesterday I received a letter from UF encouraging me to apply to their freshman transition programs but I don't really know how good they are... Can anyone who has been admitted to STEPUP please tell me what are your thoughts about these programs? My major is Industrial Engineering.

Anyone??? Please :frowning: I need information about this program

Ah…you got the “congratulations from UF engineering” letter…

Here’s the link to the two programs:

https://www.eng.ufl.edu/students/programs/freshmen-engineering-summer-bridge-programs/

Read the History and Rationale:

<a href=“Summer-Bridge Program History and Rationale - Undergraduate Student Affairs”>http://www.eng.ufl.edu/students/programs/freshmen-engineering-summer-bridge-programs/history-and-rationale/

EFTP (Engineering Freshman Transition Program) is like a special Summer B term. After being accepted you will be changed to a summer B admit and have to reserve housing, etc.

SETUP (Successful Transition and Enhanced Preparation for Undergraduates Program) is a sponsored program. It’s also requires Summer B attendance and you have to pay a $750 fee (if you’re accepted). That fee is a lot less than what you would pay for EFTP or normal summer b expenses.

If you’re an engineering student, and was admitted to Summer B, you should really take a look at these two programs. If you’re a fall admit, these may also be something you should look into.

Good Luck!

UF really has a bunch of different ways of getting in. (Traditional,ENGatSF,IA,UFonline) and now this one? I’ll give it a read and see how it compares to my experience.

@HectorSalamanca I believe that STEPUP is only for students who have been accepted to UF
@Gator88NE Thanks for replying :D

Yeah I’m aware of this. I was curious as to how this compares with traditional admissions. Looks similar but a little more with the local engineering firms.

:-B :-B :-B

SETUP is actually very different from traditional admissions, think of it as being something “added” after you’ve been accepted through the traditional method.

It’s a year-long program that begins with a residential component in the summer. Created in the early 1990’s, SETUP is designed especially for underrepresented (URMs) first-year engineering students. It includes intense refresher classes in calculus and chemistry during Summer B, plus introductions to design, AutoCAD and MATLAB, but it’s not a remedial program.

It’s an attempt at enhancing your academic preparation, begin professional networking, and to be part of peer mentoring network that will provide you support throughout your time at UF. It was created in a effort to address the high drop out rate (from engineering) of URM students. The peer mentoring and industry contacts are meant to help you navigate through UF; learn what engineering is about by visiting industry/business locations and talking with working engineers; and even to help land internships and such (via the beginnings of your professional networking).

The fees cost ($750, I think) covers registration fee, books, software and miscellaneous expenses. You are expected to have a laptop. You do not earn “credits” during summer B (unlike the EFTP program). It is a sponsored program, so all other cost are covered by the university.
