Ehh...scheduling decisions.

So my second week is coming to an end, with it comes some much needed changes to my schedule. As I previously posted, I'm a sophomore who has been in the honors program in every subject but math. This year I was going to double up math classes (Honors Algebra II & Geometry) so I could be full honors next year. Well today we had our first quiz, which I thought I was prepared for. I was wrong and because I took so much time checking my answers I was unable to finish. This has prompted some worries.

So now I'm debating on switching out of Algebra II and maybe going to regular Algebra II or even an elective. I always get A's, even with knowing that keeping that may be a tad unrealistic I'm still worried that if I stay in the class I will receive a low B or C. Will it look bad graduating without finishing Calculus?

If I did switch out I would have a lot more time to focus on my other subjects and even apply myself to more EC's. I may be able to switch into an elective that really interests me and could help me with an application (congressional page).

Opinions?

My lil brother is currently doing Geometry H and Alg II (normal)
So I kinda know your situation. My brother isn’t the smartest out there and he is doing well so far.

Is math your weakest topic? If you can handle your other honors classes then you can probably handle alg II honors. From my perspective, geometry honors is EASY. If you plan on doing a science/math major then you should finish Calculus AB by HS. If you don’t plan on doing science/math then Calculus isn’t a must. It’s your call, but you shouldn’t freak out after 1 QUIZ. 1 measly quiz! Last year I got a C on my first AP bio test, but afterwards I learned the style of the tests and got A’s from then on.

Algebra II honors isn’t hard. Learn some tricks and don’t always follow the nerd book method.

I’m not planning on going into a math/science major, I’m planning on going into business. Though I want to look good for colleges and I know about the competition for the top schools. I don’t want to be less desirable because I didn’t complete Calculus.

It’s not solely the teacher, but I’ve been having problems with some of the homework too. The teacher is a very fast speaker and goes over everything once, no more. As hard as I try, I can’t seem to connect hard problems.

Going into regular Alg II is an option. If I do clear that hour from my schedule I could take something like debate and join our debate team to increase my desirability for the internships and summer institutes I want to take.

Then algebra II regular would suit you. My friend finished HS with only precalc normal and she got into our state’s pharmacy program which has like a 10% acceptance rate. As you can see, it’s not the end of your dreams. Colleges will see that you took other hard courses.

What kind of colleges are you aiming for?

Preferably Tier 1, I haven’t seriously considered, but I’d at least like to be in a “top” school. Certainly not any Ivy League. Some names that come to mind are NYU, WUSTL, and such. I’ve been on this forum for a few years so I know what to realistically expect and those are obvious reaches for me.

Would schools like that completely overlook me for not completing an honors math course? I realize that I’d have to get good test scores and have strong EC’s, I just don’t want this one problem cause me to lose hope on getting accepted into a prestigious school.
