Eighteen credits

I was wondering if eighteen credits is too much to have...this is my very first semester at college and I am highly excited yet I felt as if my schedule was too light so I added geography as an extra elective. Most of my classes work towards my history major (World Civilizations, Western traditions) while I am also attempting to take introductory French (I have never taken a French class in college), public speaking, and the dreadful statistics. My guidance counselor said that I scored high enough on my mathematical entry exam to choose an even higher class but I have always despised math...Anyway, I'm attending Genesee Community College, and I don't really party so being intoxicated three quarters of the time is a no-no in my book. Also, I was looking at participating in the student council and a few clubs because I am dorming. Thanks!

If you’re trying to do student council and a few clubs, 18 units will be a lot. If you’re good at time management and can handle it go for it, but if you’re trying to keep a good GPA you may be a little overwhelmed by the amount of responsibility that comes from student council and clubs. So just do some thinking about it!

You can always go the first days of classes, get the syllabi, and see if 18 credits is do-able. Normally first semester students are advised to take 15 credits at most, since you are adjusting to college and the increased pace of college classes. Professors will tell you that for each hour in class, you can expect to spend 2-3 hours outside of class on preparation and homework. So 15 credits results in about 45 hours of class time and study time a week. Obviously, this is just an estimate; your workload may vary.
