does ELC improve my chances of getting into UCLA? I checked their site and they showed that people with ELC are almost twice as likely to get into the school they want. thanks.

Yes, almost 60% of the ELC students are admitted.

 The reason why these people are more likely to get into the supposed "upper tier" UCs is not because they're in ELC, but because the people in ELC tend to have good statistics to begin with in order to be considered for ELC. ELC has different ways to be eligible, and so students could be in ELC because they are at the top of their class at their school, but it could be a weak school so their stats would not be as well as some student from some magnet competitive high school who is not in ELC, but his stats are far superior to the other student from school Z that is in ELC (which is one of many many many reasons why there's a gap in percentage of ELC students who don't get into UCLA)

that means that a little more than 40% of the elc students were rejected, wow, ucla admissions are harsh.

But you also have to take into consideration that ELC only guarentees you a spot at a UC --- not necessarily at UCLA. We can't take ALL of them...

i've been reading over the ELC thing and it says that only the top 4% get it. But im in lke the top 15%. How did i get it?

How do you get it? You raise your rank 11%. ELC is defined by the top 4% of the school; if you aren't in that tier, you aren't an ELC student.

It's also worth noting here that ELC guarantees acceptance to a UC -- it may not be your choice, but it does mean that will get accepted to at least one UC school.

they usually notify more than 4% of people who would be in ELC and then give the final decision later on. at first, i was told that i didn't qualify for ELC then later i received a letter saying i did and that they made a mistake. i know quite a few people who got in through this "mistake" as well. elc just means youre already at the top of your class so of course chances of getting into ucla would be better for elc students than others

but i still don't know i got it. They want my transcripts from community college courses i took during the summer but right now im only in the top 15 percent. so does that mean im not ELC?

Just because they look at you does not mean you are in. It just means you are in the top 20% to be considered. I think I read this somewhere. They need time to calculate base on the types of course work and such, ELC does not solely base on GPA.

ELC is kinda harsh tho... one of my classmates had ELC this year and she was guranteed into UCI, got the acceptance letter and everything, then 2nd semester rolled around, she thought since she is going to UCI through ELC she could just cruise by in first semester, her rank dropped 1 spot below 4% and UCI rejected her admission...

^^ I've never heard of this before. Once you are in, you are in, unless you seriously screw up your grades and they revoke the admissions offer. You don't go to a university "through ELC"; you are an ELC student, placing you in a higher applicant pool in a way, and that means you're guaranteed admission to at least one UC school. That's it.

well ELC sended out a letter saying if you are in ELC and apply to UCI you'll get in, so she applied and got in, but when she lost the ELC spot UCI don't have to accept her anymore because my school is not the top competitive schools, people in the end of the 4% range people barely have 4.0 gpa weighted so I don't think UCI want her really in the first place but had to accept because of ELC

kck:

ELC is determined by the UC solely on Soph and Junior year grades. If a student is notified of their ELC status in September of their Senior year, (again, based on the two prior years of grades), the student is ELC, period. Senior grades do not matter for elc.

However, UCI is not one of the elc "guarantee" schools, which were SB, Merced and Riverside last year. UCI does count elc status in its holistic admissions, and routinely accepts 99% of all elc-qualified apps.

then why did UCI send me a letter telling me they are? ELC is depended on your school rank if you are within the 4%, which includeds everysingle year you are in highschool...

bluebayou, things have changed since the times when we applied. UCI for sure has become one of the ELC schools, and even UCSD I have heard has been guaranteed for some ELC students- they may be implementing some type of hierarchy within the ELC students nowadays

I think Bluebayou is correct, ELC only looks at 10th and 11th grade. At least that is what the website used to state.

Yep, UCI definitely is one of the ELC ones, seeing as how they sent a letter to be guaranteeing admission. I've no knowledge of anyone else (UCD, UCLA, and UCB apparently don't)

They don't use all highschool years to factor into ELC. Freshman grades are not used to calculate your GPA, and senior grades aren't available when evaluating. They wouldn't rescind it unless you dropped below a 3.0, I think.

on the paper they handed out to me. it said that my math hunior high grades will be looked at also.
