My S got into ERC yesterday. Reading a few websites summarizing ERC, one website says that the Core Course, Making of the Modern World (MMW), is "long, difficult, and has alot of reading".

For current or former ERC students, please reply on your opinion regarding ERC in general, housing, your experience with the Core Course MMW, and any other information about ERC that would give us input on attending this college.
Thanks

Just saw other thread RE;ERC. Will look there as well. Thanks

MMW is really not that bad, it is a lot of reading but it’s very interesting and prepares you well for upper div classes. I’m very glad I took it. ERC is great overall, best housing :)

MMW isn’t terrible. Be prepared to write. ERC GE requirements can be daunting at first, but if you came in with a few AP courses, then it clears away some of them. The main problem people have with MMW is that it restricts your course selection for five quarters. Essentially, during your first five quarters at UCSD, you can expect to take MMW. That length makes it unattractive in my opinion. It’s a nice survey of world history though. The housing is nice, but it’s relatively far from the center of campus. So, be prepared to walk everyday. ERC has a very tight knit community because of this though. Avoid the dining hall. The quality of food is miserable in comparison to other dining halls.

I actually live off campus, so my entire direction is going ot be MMW based :)

i walked into MMW cursing my bad luck, thinking how unfortunate i was ( i wanted Muir), and guess what… just two courses in, and I think MMW is fantastic, of course this may have to do with me having Prof. Herbst both times (he is an amazing professor… If you listen to his lectures, you will be stunned at how well balanced he is. In fact, time flies in his class (you know that saying, time flies when you’re having fun!)
lolz

MMW 11 is intro, you basically read and study and pay attention. MMW 12 on wards is when essays come. But believe me, it’s much easier than high school (shockingly). 1. the prompts are easy to understand, and with the help of TAs its quite simple. 2. You have all your sources “pointed” out to you. ie. you can use this, but can’t use this. 3. You have TAs to help proofread it, etc. TAs are going to grade your paper, so ask them for help 4. In MMW 12, I only had to write THREE essays, that’s like half of what i wrote in AP English!! Granted, it was for different purposes, but still you have about a week and a half to write them, and if you split and manage your time wisely, they are a piece of cake (of course procrastination always interferes :P)

ERC, imho is one of the most amazing campuses there. The style is just so different, and the buildings are fantastic. It’s a whole different atmosphere (for me at least) whenever I go to ERC to attend section.

Your S will definitely love it at ERC (cough BEST COLLEGE AT UCSD!! cough cough) :); and this is coming from someone who was kinda disappointed at getting into ERC.

Best of Luck to your S!
