Eleanor Roosevelt College

Anything know anything about it other than the general pretty hard GEs and good dorms? Any details about it?

Anyone else get into this collegeee?

i got into here! i spent the summer at ucsd and erc was by far the prettiest campus ever. i dont know much about it though - about the same as you - that they have reaking hard GEs.

congrats, btw!

Cafe V has nice foods, we have Pangea Parking Structure, so very convenient in parking if you have a car..what else..our laundry mat is right next to the Student Activities Center between the dorms and apartments..there are 5 dorm buildings for freshmen (europe, north america, africa, asia, latin america)...our lawn is very pretty, now that it's warmer, people just lay around in their bathing suits and study on the grass...apparently our college has the most "money"...there are 4 bus stops very close by...ocean view if you are on the top...oh and also, it is BEAUTIFUL during sunset because all the freshmen dorms patio face the ocean :) The GE's are not as hard as everyone puts it to be...i mean, just go to the lectures, and you should do well. like all the other colleges, we only write for 2 quarters..the only reason why many see erc ge's as hard is because we also have 4 quarters of history/anthropology stuff to learn.

i don't know..i might be able to answer specific questions better than just trying to think of everything to type :).

i got in erc!

oh this is also kinda random... but is there a gym there?

The baddest izass gym in San Diego (RIMAC) is right by ERC.

yup yup! ^^ we also have a mini library and i-house (international house - erc has the most transfer international students, especially from europe, out of all the colleges because it puts the most emphasis on studying abroad programs).

great! thanks. sounds fantastic!!

I have a question about ERC housing- are all of the rooms built around a suite/lounge area like in this diagram? (<a href="http://www.hds.ucsd.edu/erc/layouts.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.hds.ucsd.edu/erc/layouts.html</a>)</p>

I'd prefer to get a single but cost-wise I'm not sure I'll be able to, and my parents really want me to get a double so I'll have the whole roommate experience. I really wouldn't mind having a double as long as there was also a common area that my roommate and I could use (i.e. I tend to stay up pretty late doing homework, so if my roommate wanted to sleep I could go study out in the common area).

I sent in my housing app (which was just a couple of clicks of "yes" --- correct me if I'm wrong!).

Is there any way to select a room on a higher floor? I'd like to have a mini-ocean view, haha.

miss blue sky, haha no, sorry, no choice in selecting a room on higher floor, all from luck ^__^

Raychul07, yeah the dorms pretty much look like that, though my particular suite had another single room across from the bathroom.

trust me, it's WORTH having a single because you will still be living with 10+ students in your suite, and it's nice to just have some space by yourself when you need it. and it's only $500 more (for the whole year!) than a double and single is actually more than half size of a double room.

So how do we pick if we want a single or double? Do you have to submit your SIR first before you can fill out the entire housing thing? The housing application I turned in was only a few clicks of "yes" and verifying my address?

yupyup. later on after submitting your sir you get to do this whole "i sleep early/late, i do/do not listen to music, i prefer a single/double, i want to be in the residential halls/apartment, etc" multiple choice survey. The fact that you already submitted your housing app right now gives you priority if you choose "single" instead of a "double" in the real housing application later :) (so essentially when it comes to the time to do the "real" housing application, you don't have to rush or anything because you already secured a spot early, make sense?). last year i was able to change any preferences on the real housing application by end of june or something...my memories kinda ****ty XD

^ "****ty" ahah wow i did not realize that cc automatically bleeps out "bad" words @__@ hahaha XD

Ohh okay so those few clicks that we just made basically gaurantees us housing in ERC? Sweet!! :)

i'm seriously excited for this school.
erc is by far the best looking college at ucsd!

and the people/food were really nice too. :)

i think i should get a single if i go there given how cramped a triple would be. I figure if you apply for a single they'd atleast give you a double

i got into erc, but im quite intimidated by their infamous "Making of the Modern World" intensive writing program....is it really that hard?

Also, if you could describe the GEs at ERC, what would those words be?

MMW's tight. it's the entire history of the world! as for the writing part of it, the two quarters of "intensive writing" do get pretty annoying. it's pretty much non-stop writing of about 6 page papers. it's because of this that you get 6 credits for these classes instead of the regular 4.

As for the rest of my GEs, because of APs i was already done with my science, language, and a quarter of regional specialization.

As of now i'm also done with my arts and math requirements. all i have left is MMW and two quarters of regional specialization.

So, at least for me, the GEs were pretty damn easy; i'm essentially done with them and i've only been here two quarters (i'm a first year)

yup same here, i finished most of the GE's with AP's, all i have to complete is 2 art classes (one has to be western and the other non-western) and mmw with regional specialization. don't let the "intensive writing" scare you because it's actually a lot better than it sounds :) for mmw2, i wrote 3 papers, the first two 4-6 pages (double spaced) and the third 6-8 pages (double spaced as well). i believe mmw3 is the same, and that's all the "intensive writing" there is. and don't worry if you don't do well on your essays because they actually don't count as much as your midterm and final (first essay was worth only 8% while the midterm is like 30% or something...plus you get points for attending discussion). what you should worry more about is catching up on reading.
