all i know is for erc the required course is called 'mmw(making of the modern world), and basically its like a writing history course (i think). requirement is 6 quarters, taught chronologically, and the last one is like the causes of world war one... sooo i dont know about this

congrats to everyone who got into erc!! imo it's one of the best colleges of the six at ucsd. so here's a general overview of what it means to be an erc student, academically speaking:

if you want to check out general ed reqs, go to provost.ucsd.edu/roosevelt<-- the erc webpage ... under academics. if you're a non-science major and worried about science reqs, it's not too terrible. you take lame classes like "Water" or "Natural Disasters" to fill these reqs, and my non-science friends have found these classes to be relatively painless

mmw is the core writing/history course. it's 2 years long, 6 quarters, and you basically learn about everything. mmw 1 starts with the dawn of man... no really, you read a book called The Dawn of Man.. then mmw 2 is the birth of civilization and religion... then you learn more about religion/history in mmw... the middle ages is mmw 4, and then industrial/scientific revolutions/ englightenment in mmw5 and wwI-present in mmw 6.

It's really tedious sometimes, and to science majors like me, it may seem very very useless. also, there are no JC classes that will satisfy the beastly mmw requirement. However, the class does make you a well-rounded person, and it also makes you very aware of our history and how our social/economic/governing structures have evolved and why. most likely, you will at one point hate this class and think that it's totally ruining your life... but then you get over it because you have to... and also, it's nice that all your suitemates will be taking the same class as you, so you can bond and do all that social freshmen stuff. plus, the mmw profs are all really really cool

in addition to mmw and the other requirements (math and science and foreign language), you have a fine arts requirement, where you have to take 1-2 non-western music/art/theatre class.

ok, in addition to this, you have what's called Regional Specialization, which entails 3 classes focusing on a particular region of the world. This is kind of a pain- a lot of kids do these classes while studying abroad. I'm going to stop writing about it because i don't wantto have to think about it =)

oh and also, if you plan to go to erc for sure, fill out your housing application FAST! because if you lag, you will get stuck living in revelle. Let me tell you why this is bad: Revelle dorms, although not terribly bad, are vastly inferior to erc dorms. and second, all you mmw classes will be nearer to erc dorms than revelle's, and all you're sections will be in erc.

so in summary, don't be afraid of mmw; it may suck, but you will get over it. and basically, you cant rank erc against the other colleges, because all of them have their pros/cons- ucsd is a good school, you'll be fine wherever :)

ok hope this helps, im happy to answer any random questions

are erc dorms coed at all?

So if I'm not sure at all that I want to go to UCSD...I should still send out my housing app so I won't get stuck in Revelle? Or can you not withdraw your housing app once you turn it in?

uhh, i'm not 100% sure, but i'm leaning towards... you can turn in your housing application without the SIR. i want to say you can withdraw it by not going to ucsd, because it's not a binding contract or anything. but i do know that it's first-come, first-serve on whether you get erc or revelle dorms.

so, in summary, YES<-- im pretty sure you can, but dont quote me on it

ucsdisway1337, that post was crazy helpful.
thanks!

anyone studying engineering in ERC??

darn....ucsd still hasn't sent me mail....i can't do the housing thing until i get my PID...ahh!!! what if erc gets too full by the time i try to apply...

^you can get your PID online. click the start acceptance process link and it says it on the first page < i was scared to do it at first but you can just close it without any commitment... anyway that's what i did and it worked fine.

^ oh thank you so much! btw...so sorry but whats a Residence Hall Rate Saver? i don't get what the difference is between residence hall and Residence Hall Rate Saver...

from what I've gathered from spending too much time on CC:
regular res hall = 2 people
res rate saver = 3 people

i got into erc and im a guy but ill most likely just go to ucla

I got into ERC! Is the math GE a requirement for nonscience majors too?

yes, unfortunately. most people take stats or something like that to fulfill the "quantitative skills" portion of the GE (aka the math part)

hey you guys! i just committed to UCSD's ERC! I'm a Cognitive Science major... yay!!!!

ERC has the best dorms, so I've heard!

Does anyone know if the academic curves are similar to that of Cal and UCLA?

latin america, europe, asia, north america, africa, south america, geneva, kathmandu, geneva, middle earth? ..i hope i'm not forgetting any. Anyway, do we get to choose which one we live in? Is there a difference?

N. America, Latin America, Europe, Asia, Africa are the 5 Res Halls aka Freshmen dorms.

All the rest are apartments or I-house, like Oceania, Earth Halls North and South, Geneva, Middle East and Mesa Verde.

Middle Earth is the student lounge, and other buildings like Cuzco, Kathmandu.... are I-house apts.

So, freshman only really get to live in the dorms. They give you the option of choosing apartment for no real reason because you will most likely never get it. The only way that you would get apartment is if they really had no room left, which probably doesnt happen because they fill the Revelle fleets first. Besides, you don't really want to live in the apartments and forego the 'first-year' experience. You have to go through it first before deciding that you like it or not. But hey, that's just my opinion.

So yeah, you don't get to choose which hall you get put in, although you can later request a roommate. I would encourage you not to take the "Rate-Saver" option unless you're really really strapped for cash because it's basically 3 people squished into a double room. OR, sometimes they put 2 people in a single, which sucks, A LOT.

ok hope that answers that Q, happy to answer more =)

Thanks ucsdthisway!!!

I am not sure if this has already been discussed... but is it easy for freshman to get parking and bring a car? Also how does language placement work? I've been taking Japanese for three years, but I know college language classes probably move faster than high school ones..

Thank yoU!

im a guy, accepted at ERC (my first choice actually). so dont worry 8) not too sure yet though. BASICALLY choosing between undeclared ERC at UCSD and Double Major Engineering + Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon way out there in Pennsylvania. =/
