Electives at UCLA if you completed IGETC

im transferring as a math major to ucla. im going to complete igetc before transfer. i was wondering whether im still going to have to take general ed electives once i transfer? i know that i have to take many math electives but my question is whether im going to need non-major related electives? if so, how many classes/units? thanks.

you have to check several things:

your major requirements and how many you have completed or will need to complete.

your amount of units, overall

when do you want to leave.

You need 180 quarter units to graduate from UCLA, regardless of what "year" you are. Because of this, you must check to see what classes you have yet to take.

Let's say you have 13 classes for your major completion, therefore it adds up to 52 units.

You entered UCLA with 90. Therefore, after you complete you major requirements, you will only have 142. This leaves you 38 units shy of graduation.

Which is why you have to take 8 to 10 (depending on their units) "extra" classes in order to satisfy the graduation requirements. Keep in mind that these are for upper division units and that you can no longer take classes at community college.

Also remember that in order to be eligible for UCLA Latin Honors, you need to have taken at least 90 of your +180 units AT UCLA. So let's say you entered UCLA with 98 quarter units. You will need 188 in order to graduate AND be eligible for Latin honors.

All in all, you have to figure out how many classes you will be taking per quarter in order to graduate within the unit minimum and limit (180 to 215, i believe). Also, if you want to leave in 2 years, prepare to do some summer school.

k thanks a couple questions.

1) is uclas summer school just as long as other semesters (10 weeks)?
2) just to clarify... if i transfer to ucla with 95 community college units (i know ucla will only take like 70 or something..) ... and all prereqs/igetc completed... then including all upper major reqs how many more ucla units do i need? thanks

UCLA summer school varies, usually two 6 week sessions is the norm. There are some rare courses that run for 10 weeks, some for 5, but 6 is the norm.

You need 60 upper division units. 180 total units, of which 105 can come form community college.

If you transfer in with 95 community college QUARTER units, then you will need to take an additional 85 quarter units, of which 60 must be upper division.

If you meant 95 semester units, of which 70 you would get unit credit for, which is 105 quarter units, than you would need to take 75 more units at UCLA, of which 60 must be upper division.

Just to modify a bit on what xleper17 said- if you enter with 90 quarter units to UCLA, you will need to take 90 more units at UCLA. 60 of these units need to be upper division, but 30 can be lower division, of those 30 , 15 units can still be taken at Community College because you get community college credit until you reach 105 community college units taken. So if you enter with less than 105 community college transfered units, you can take courses at community college until you reach that number and they will transfer.

and if you're a transfer student with some previous work at another UC then those units count toward the 90 too, right?

hmm so i guess it works perfectly for me.

my major requires 61 upper division units and i need to take 15 lower divisions for my major that werent available at ccc. considering 105 units transfer over from ccc, giving me 181; does that mean i dont have to take any classes unrelated to my major??

correct you dont. Unless your major has some sort of clause that tells you to take courses unrelated to the major. Some majors have this.
